A site I designed for a local bar:

    http://www.upsibar.co.uk

Almost done apart from a few tweaks here and there.

I was trying for a fun looking site, and also to get away from a 'web standards/bloggy' kind of look - let me know what you think.

It should validate ok, maybe apart from the odd unencoded amphersand or two.

    Many thanks,

    Gary

I like, it certainly looks pretty original.

My main problem with it though is the loading time! The side panels load then after another 5 seconds or so at least, the main content loads. I didn't even know there was main page content until I left it to load a little longer!

The menu text is very small with IE @ 'smaller' text setting (default).

I feel the shoutbox should have a greater margin.

In the content, the text goes over the dark blue line - looks a bit out of place.

The range of text syles and size bugs me a bit - and in IE I can't seem to find a size setting in the browser which will allow the whole site to be readable without being too large.

    Thanks Mark,

Loading time, yep it's an issue - it seems it's the shoutbox slowing things down there, maybe I should abs position it and put it last in the html - it's definately something that's bugging me as there's only five images used in the layout design and it should load pretty fast!

'Text going over the blue line' not entirely sure what you mean there?

about the font size in IE -not really sure what to do about that - apart from use px instead - zoiks!

Thanks for your comments mate, much appreciated.

You can see from the screenshot, the text on the right is going over that dark blue line.

Ah, I see! Thanks Mark, sorted that now

Looking at it in a higher res, I'm thinking it needs a max-width setting for the content div so the content lines up with the headings...

    Thanks again,

    Gary

I like it overall, looks nice and neat and original. I can't really say much more from what's already been said really, however is it me or does one side of the shoutbox look like it has more padding/border than the other? Probably just my eyesight perceiving it incorrectly.

Load time wasn't that much of an issue here however it'd be better if it was a bit faster.

your headers break. wouldn'e a big deal as they all break at a real small resolution but, the first one (welcome to upsi...) breaks at 800x600. Not line breaks as thats a given, but the line breaks out of the header itself.

on the load time and ab-pos the shout box. You shouldn't have to worry about that. since the content is already ab-pos than just move it up in the HTML. That way you dont have to fiddle with positioning the box correctly.

Graphically. See how the pink section has a slight shadow on it? What about giving the same treatment to the light blue section as well. So that they seem stacked. Well after looking at it it might be easier to do it to the content section instead. So making the nav bar seem elevated above the rest. Shuld be easy enough to do. The vertical shadow would be part of the background image of the page and the top shadow would just be the background image of the content div.

Check your Opening Times list for correctness.

On the contact form. It is slow to come back & say that a required field was left out or missing. Have you thought about using a JavaScript check the fields that are required before the form is submitted?

I like it. You departed from the norm, but I think it still has a bloggy feel to it. Maybe it's the content colum, or font, not sure. I don't hold that against it though. My biggest beef with it was, as others noted, it the loading. When I brought up the site at first I saw the two side columns, I thought it was maybe a landing page. I even thought to myself, how interesting... no content is a true departure fromthe blog look. Then the content finally loaded. Do you know why it's so slow? Is it the server? I mean I have a wicked fast broadband connection.

    Thanks

Thanks for all the comments & sorry for not replying sooner: kinda got tied up with all the festivities going on......hic..........burp.....

HarbingerOTV: yeah I think the shading should be carried over to the content area, just to tie it all in a bit, will look into that when I get a min.

The loading time is really frustrating me though, I tried moving the content div so it is earlier in the code order - but the whole layout blew! (well the layout of the content div did) Still this is really bugging me, and I wondered if anyone could have another look and maybe suggest something?

    Kindest Regards,

    Gary
