    Site Review Please

Hi guys, I've been working on this for quite some time, and was wondering if I could get some specific feedback on how to improve usability and readability.

This is one of my first sites, and I started it as a project to teach myself PHP from level 1. So any feedback you have, is appreciated.

    Thank you!

It's a GREAT site Matt, really nicely made. Great Job. What's next login and comments? What about rating videos? I can give one 5 stars, then when I view say animations category I can list ordered by rating? Also when you actually click on a movie, a film and view its details, you could have a next button to view the next film in the current list? maybe a previous button also? Just suggestions. Great work.

<DmncAtrny> I will write on a huge cement block "BY ACCEPTING THIS BRICK THROUGH YOUR WINDOW, YOU ACCEPT IT AS IS AND AGREE TO MY DISCLAIMER OF ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS WELL AS DISCLAIMERS OF ALL LIABILITY, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL, THAT MAY ARISE FROM THE INSTALLATION OF THIS BRICK INTO YOUR BUILDING."
<DmncAtrny> And then hurl it through the window of a Sony officer
    <DmncAtrny> and run like hell

Next I was going to look into enabling user registration/comments. I was going to add in user history, watch lists, etc. I think that will really benefit the user when I start adding shorter watches(tv shows). Also, I really like the idea of sorting by user rating, definitely something I'm going to look into implementing. Anything to make the site easier to navigate.

The next/previous button is also a great idea to help internal structure. I've been reading up on ways to create the best internal linking structure, which is why I'm always looking for more optional sorts, like actors, directors, etc.

But overall, is everything easy on the eyes, and easy to read/see?

I greatly appreciate the feedback, Neil! I hope all is well.

It lets you watch movies for free. I'll add in a description section, though. Good suggestion, thanks!

just out of curiosity....did you click on a link and still have confusion? or did you just sit at home page confused? Trying to figure out how I want to go about this.

I sat at the homepage, didnt go anywhere. Dont expect people to try and find the meaning of your site, find a way for them to understand your site at any point of access.

Viewing at 1024/768 the right hand side of the screen is unviewable as it's off the viewport and there's no horizontal scrollbar.

The menu at the top seems too small compared to the rest of the page. Also, picky picky, but "Search movie titles" appears to be too low down in the search box (at least in FF7).

You've got a few errors in your markup, almost all because you've got <h2> tags within <a> tags, rather than the other way around.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't entirely sure what to do with the <h2><a> situation, as I can't get firefox to pick up my styles correctly if I go <h2><a>, but if I go <a><h2> firefox picks up the styles fine. Is there some sort of penalty related to having markup errors even if the page runs?

Also, is 1024/768 a very common screen res? Should I redo the size of the site? or just add a scroll bar?

    Thanks for the post!

Re the invalid code you're more likely to get cross browser consistency if your code is valid, and arguably it might be marginally better for SEO purposes.

1024/768 - still a fair few monitors out there with this admittedly low resolution - including the one on which I first viewed your site used as a secondary to my laptop. 7% of the users of my site have 1024/768. Users with mobile devices will have a much smaller resolution. I guess they may not be primary users due to bandwidth issues but do you really want to make part of the screen inaccessible?

You could make the width of the site flexible so it'll accommodate different resolutions - in your case the nature of the site lends itself to this approach - if you make the width of .column1 20%, and .column_2_index 75% sat within .index_image_header at 100%, or maybe 90% then you're half way there, needs a bit of tidying up. Otherwise a scrollbar would be better than it is now I think.
