    Homepage redesign review

    All,

I run this site: www.yourlistonline.com and I'm looking to slightly modify the home page to focus on some of the features on the site that people don't seem to know about.

    My first attempt is this:
    http://www.yourlistonline.com/index_test.html

I was wondering if you could provide some feedback on it. I haven't done any cross-browser testing yet, just built and checked in FF3.

    Thanks

Personally, I prefer the general look of your existing page - it's immediately clearer exactly what the site offers. Your new page looks very cluttered.

That said, the existing site has four different logins/registers, including two that look identical for login. I think this is confusing to your users and more confusing for your first time users. I would have thought having a login with an option to register or sign up (assuming these are the same thing) that takes you to a different page would be fine, then a "Find A List" section - giving you just two forms. If you cut down on the forms that'll free up a bit of space for you.

I like the Plan Your Party and Send eCard sections - these are much more prominent than the existig links.

The "Great Deals" section doesn't do it for me - I'd lose this and use the space to promote the other functions.

    Hope this helps.

EDIT: Oh, one other thing - your page title says "Christmas wish list" - would have thought amending this to be more general - "Wish Lists for Birthdays, Weddings, Christmas" - might be better for SEO.

Center it. Please, god, center it!

Your new page is very busy. My eyes have no idea where to go.

I too agree with above post. Center it.... Also, I don't agree with all that text under the bottom banner post it there. You should create a Terms of Use page. The Great deals section needs more and less repetition. Just my opinion....

@SB65, great feedback. The goals I'm trying to accomplish are 3 fold with the redesign...

    1) Based on user feedback, 75% of users didn't know about the ecard features or the party planning features, so I want to do a better job conveying all the main features of the site right off the bat.

    2) 70% of my traffic is on the shopping sections of the site, I wanted to feature some items right off the bat on the home page (popular products, seasonal items, great deals, etc).

    3) I want to clean up the duplicate registration forms. I agree with you on the duplicate registration issue, it's been annoying me for a while.

@Apostropartheid - yeah, that's got to be done. Will do.

@ilouie - most of that is there to promote SEO on the site. It's below the fold and I haven't seen any complaints from users on it.

I've been thinking about possibly extending the entire top sections down 200+ px, and move the ecards / party stuff there the great deals are, then put shopping deals under both those sections in a 3 x 4 grid. Any thoughts on that approach?

    Btw -

Here's an alternative design that I came up with, but scrapped as a "too radical" change. It's more web 2.0y, with a more social networking aspect, but I'd still love to get more feedback on it.

    Thanks
