I beleive, making a valid and semantic document is the first step in making a good UI.

It's very...tacky. It looks unfinished, though I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that this is because it IS.

Let's go through one at a time. You're using Times New, which was made about 70 years ago--this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was designed for print, not screens. Consider a common sanserif.

Telling you this now will save you a lot of hassle: bevelling and embossing died with the dot com bubble. It's ugly now.

Your header image is unnaturally stretched. Keep it at its original ratio; resize it proportionally if you have to.

The whole thing could use a bit more maturity. Study some CSS templates: you're not the first amateur website designer, nor will you be the last. Take what you like from them, whether it be the structure of the page, a color scheme or a choice of font. Look at websites you frequent and see how they differ from yours.

I agree completely with Apostropartheid. Yet this is not to be considered as a "go home and never come back" review, more of please take what Apostropartheid said to help you along the way. Get your code back up on the screen and re-think your design. Go to smashing magazine and look for inspiration. Think what is the next level up from what you've done. Yet i've seen what you've done several times before, amendments, inspiration and learning will help you to evolve. Also, the smallest details count, dont miss them. Margin and padding, use if needed. Don't took all text into its container like a wild beast.

    Regards, Phil

    EDIT:

Also think what use this has to the average site... drag and drop shopping basket maybe?

Cant help it, from the other end of the spectrum it might have sounded as if you were poking him in the eye. From this end, you were merely removing the eyelash.

well i am not taking the criticism too seriously since this is an interface review and not a style review and i have not even touched the style yet really it looks the way it does to make it easy to see what is going on and like Apostropartheid said

It looks unfinished, though I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that this is because it IS.
my style portion is untouched i am more interested in the overall control aspect at this moment and once i am sure it is up to par i will move on and begin my style portion also i dunno if it will help with what i am trying to demonstrate but this will in the end be a social network site designed for gamers so the idea behind the interface was to give it a video game console feel while the user is on my website

Oh, when you say UI it usually encompasses GUI too. I see where you're coming from. That's different, then.

OK I'll pipe up.. The animation takes way too long. After 15 seconds of paging through each menu item I long for the animation to go away forever.

Plus I would like to see the submenu items as I mouse over each menu item, rather than having to click on the menu item to see the submenu items.

The windows on the main page should be moved just by dragging the window (perhaps just in the title bar area of the window) since this is an accepted standard. And the resize action should be done by dragging from the corner of the window.

your suggestions r very helpful i was even thinking about making the sliding nav work on a wrap around method so to get to the last tab from the first u could just go backwards and same for the inverse
