Question Feedback needed on my 1st ever site( New Design Done )

    Hi everyone,

I have just built my 1st ever website and could really use some feedback on it, this site is an ongoing project for me and hasn't had all the information added to it yet.
Please bear in mind this is my 1st ever website and I am a real beginner when it comes to site building but please feel free to comment on anything you like or don't like about it as this would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help

Its pretty amateurish. It was done using Microsoft Office which is NOT a web page creating program. The graphics don't look that great. They look like they were done in Paint. Your layout is too wide for my 1280x800 resolution which it should be.

I do like the concept behind the site however.

You have 64 coding errors and 13 warnings. See your errors here.

Alright, I wrote almost an essay about the stuff I didn't like, but I got caught up in the holy bible of web2 standards. Let me say this:

It's a fine website to start off with. My personal first web page was exactly like that. Your going to want to learn about a number of the current techniques such as SEO, validating your site, not using frames (or MSOffice), making nice, clean designs, etc. The loading times are quite slow; this can be fixed by reducing the "tag soup", using text and not images for text, not using frames, etc. The project is a great idea and I can see it evolving into an excellent website, or even a company.

Good job, and good luck in the future!

Thank you for the comments guys they were very helpful, I'm currently taking everything you have both said on board to use in the redesign, which I have already started work on btw, also I am playing about with Dreamweaver 8 to use for the redesign instead of MS Publisher.

I am very passionate about the subject of the site and have been working on the research side for the last couple of years, so thank you for saying it's a good concept.

Thank you, your help is much appreciated

I like the graphics a little better. Decent job there. In Firefox 3.0.1 there seems to be a lot of black when I think it should be white. You have used way too much absolute positioning.

I suggest you look into the layout here: http://bonrouge.com/3c-hf-fixed.php

    Just a thought....

Are you going to ensure that all sites you link to are safe - even those who pay you for sponsorship? You may need to clarify that on the site so that visitors can see there is no conflict of interest or even a contradiction between what you display and how you earn.

Yes, that design definitely is better. I would make the WHOLE background of the page all one color. Note that marquee is a deprecated element, so you should look into javascript workarounds. Also if the site was a bit more fluid, in other words so that it resizes itself and looks good in any browser size. I have 1024x768 monitor, and it is too wide for mine.

I wouldn't use a marquee at all. They're nasty little things. Just keep it in a box which you can scroll, which is both usable and nice.

Thanks for all the comments this is much appreciated,

1st, The marquee will be removed with the next update, I wasn't sure if that would be a good or a bad thing so just wanted to test it out.

2nd, Yes I am making sure that every single site is checked before being linked to even if I get paid to display them and I have placed a statement about that on the site but I'm going to move that to the very 1st page so everyone knows and its made clear that under no conditions that I will allow a dangerous site to be linked to my site.
Also with the links paid or unpaid I am going to be checking them often to make sure that they remain safe to use, I don't think just because a link pays me it should be treated any differently than the rest.

3rd, The black spaces I'm not to sure about why they are there at the moment but think it could be down to the use of the background colour not being just one colour for the whole page so I will be changing that too.

4th, Going to look into the absolute positioning as I don't know anything about this to be honest.

5th, Is there a html coding I could use that would make sure that at any resolution the site would resize it's self as I can't go any lower than 1280x720 on my screen?

Also note that this won't be the very final design of my site as I plan to make this site a life long commitment and one day a company so I will be updating it often.
I am building a few different templates for use on my site at the moment.

I just like to say one final thing, thank you so much for helping out a newbie to site design, it is very much appreciated and can I place a link back to this site on mine?

@5: very probably you CAN go below 1280 by 720, most graphics cards have support to 800 by 600 and usually a legacy 640 by 480 somewhere. Look into percentages or fluid layouts, or just design to a 750 pixel maximum width.

Thanks CyanLight, I will look into percentages and fluid layouts.
Oh my graphics cards are fine with going down to those resolutions but it's my monitor that doesn't support those resolutions as it's a 37inch high definition TV that I use with all my computers.

I'm just doing the changes and updates to my website at the moment and will let everyone know when the changes are completed and uploaded.

Thanks to everyone for all their help and support it's much appreciated.

Best redesign yet. Looks Great! This merits another review:

    Design:
    - I think it would look nice if the shadow on the logo faded out on the edges, instead of just being cut off.
    - On the menu, you've got little tiny white pixels around the corners on each of the items.
    - Beautiful effects, excellent use of flash (only where it is needed)
    - The arrows on the boxes look a tad out of place; maybe its that they're 3D where everything isn't
    - Black background of the "Symantech" box looks bad, change it to white. I don't know if you can change that (it looks like an externally hosted script) but if you can, do it.

    Technical:
    - Still too big for my screen
    - I would link the titles "Safe Website List", etc so that they lead to the actual page
    - Clicking on links doesn't change the address in the address bar

    Content:
    - Doesn't seem to be anything in the site map page

Excellent job, I love the new design!

Thanks for the great comment, just noticed that the site map page I uploaded was the template one and not the content one with the list of pages, this will be corrected in tomorrows updates.
I also noticed that the address doesn't change when clicking on the links, I need to contact my domain name company and my hosting company over that because I need to find out why it's doing that and correct it.

Going to make some very minor changes in the design in the updates tomorrow like the 3d arrows have some not in 3d that I will try out.

Thanks once again for looking and commenting its much appreciated
