    Looking for ideas and criticism

    Hi all,

So, self taught starting about 5 months ago, blah blah you know the deal.

Anyway, starting to get more into design and have started on a template for fun and would like some input. I have kind of hit a wall as far as ideas go. I am almost tempted to leave it as is, as it is nice and simple.

    http://drewsdesigns.com/test/gradblue/gradblue2.html

Anyway, bring on the criticism and suggestions please, I could use it

    Drew

Edit-Haven't tested it in any IE versions yet. The HTML wont validate because of the free hosting ads, but in essence it does.

For a design, its simple and nice. Overall for a new designer very very good.

    Positives:
Clean and easy to read, things are well positioned my opinion.
    Colors are nice and enjoyable.

    Could Improve On:
Typeface, perhaps not everything should be Verdana?
You have excess CSS, which some of it could be consoldated (like the links part, a lot of it could be reduced to just the ul.links a {} style)
Width - it seems rather thin...perhaps a way to make it more fluid?

    General Things:
The roundedness seems almost too round...to me at least. Thats opinion though.
There could be some images somewhere.
The padding and style of the links don't allow for them to have very long titles.
Scales pretty well, except the link buttons like above.

Agreed, one of my weaknesses is font styles, I'll see what I can find.

You have excess CSS, which some of it could be consoldated (like the links part, a lot of it could be reduced to just the ul.links a {} style)
Width - it seems rather thin...perhaps a way to make it more fluid?
I worried the CSS links were excessive, but I am a little unsure as how to cut it down, I am not sure I understood your example.

    General Things:
The roundedness seems almost too round...to me at least. Thats opinion though.
Thats funny you say that as I thought the same thing when I first had it layed out. It is growing on me though

Again, thanks for your suggestions and if you could suggest a way to cut down on my bloated CSS I would appreciate it.

Hi rangana! Thanks for the kind words!

I thought I had seen your name around here a few times and was hoping to "bump into you."

I know this is off topic, but I owe you a huge thank you for all your help while I was (and still am) learning some of the basics.

Anyway, good to see you around, thanks again for the kind words, and I am sure you will save me again some day

    Best Regards,

    Drew

seeing as the page was called 'gradblue', I was expecting to see some gradients. Not bad that i didn't but first impressions . I kind of agree with the elements being a little "too round" but it is consistent. On the navigation, if you know for a fact that you are going to have one word titles for them, maybe centering them in the buttons would look nicer. They are padding from the left pretty far and almost looks like your were trying to center them and missed by a few pixels.

Overall, nice and simple. Some slight gradients and a little more imagery would definitely help it out though.

    Technical:
    - Doesn't validate

    Design:
    - I like the design. I think the amount of rounded corners actually gives the site a nice feel, and the gradients aren't overdone either.

I like the design concept, but for me i dont like rounded corners too much. I know i may be a boring person, but im a fan of square. Other than that it seems to flow well and is easy to naavigate. Good job!

Self-taught 5-month-old web designer here too.

(When can you call yourself a "web designer" anyway? When you get paid for a site?)

Doesn't break at higher font sizes = good.

For font ideas this has been a good resource for me:

    http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

From a graphic design standpoint, it's a little disconcerting that the text isn't totally centered in the bounding areas. That little quirk is noticeable all the more because of the visually soothing effect of the rounded corners and blue colors. I know from experience that that can be hard to achieve across browsers, but there it is.

I daresay you can call yourself a web designer when you start designing for the web. Whether you're any GOOD at it is a different concept entirely.

One thing which irritates me is the top nav has its text left aligned instead of centered. Otherwise, it's soothing, it looks nice in its fallback font and is quite tasteful. Although you won't get much text in the sidebar links, really...

looks nice, good job using several different colors together and still making it look nice

IMHO, lose off-center nav text. it was the very first thing i noticed and its been driving me nuts ever since. Also, I feel like you should vertically center the header text.

I would make the side nav links less intrusive so that the content has more space horizontally. The side nave links look to me like they're on a touch-screen ATM or something

I really like the content section.

bottom line: good site once you center the text lol

PS - you can copy your source code and paste it into the validator so that the ads aren't involved.
PHP Tip: If you want to use short tags (<? or <?=$var) then make sure short_open_tag is set to "1". It really helps.

Good point, I intended to have more gradients but the only one is very hard to see, behind the header. Thanks for your comments harbinger.

Yah, I know technically it doesnt validate, but like I said its just because of the free hosting ads that are up right now Thanks for the nice words also.

Thanks a lot for the link, and I agree that the uncentered text is annoying, I havent had a chance to mess with that design lately but I will def change that . Appreciate your input

Cool, I guess I technically am a "web designer" wether or not I am any good or not I leave to you

Agreed about the text, thank you for the feedback.
