    Good Idea or Bad Idea?

I have made the following site and I was wondering if anyone can give me input on the concept and if I am just wasting my time. This is a travel tips website where people can go to share their travel experiences or get travel advice. I am going to incorporate a few more ideas I have with this thus expanding the concept for people wanting to gain information about traveling. Like adding a photo section where people can add their travel photos for other people to get ideas about travel plans or just bragging rights or maybe a hotel rating system... where to stay... where to eat.... the list can be endless. The travel industry is a billion dollar industry and I was wondering if this site could ever lean towards profit and if so how? I have worked my but off on the graphics and what not. I am not finished with it.

If anyone is interested in getting involved with this site just let me know. Two heads (or more) are always better then one. Also to add... Travel domain names are almost impossible to get and especially a good domain name. I came up with this name and I think it has a ring to it. I also bought the pluralized domain name. I was surprised after hours of punching in dot com names with the word travel in it that this name was even available. See for yourself by trying to get a travel dot come especially one that makes sense or stands out and doesn't look tacky.

So in closing if anyone here can give me advice, let me know if this is a reasonable idea, offer any input at all or if you are interested in getting involved with this project email me at shakyfry@charter.net.

    Here is the site:
    http://traveldoer.com
Please keep in mind I am still working on it.
    Thanks and take care.

I think it's a fine idea... the key of course will be marketing to get enough people contributing content to make the site worth visiting. You may have to pay people to submit content for a while just to get enough content to bring in visitors to the site.

The domain name is ok, but you should probably capitalize the "D" wherever you display it so the two words have some separation. And, it kind of rhymes with evil doer, which may or may not be a good thing, I dunno

    I found these available:

    www.travel-logs.com
    www.traveltheworldandseethesights.com
    www.travelsmarttravelhappy.com
    www.gurusoftraveling.com
    www.travelwiththegurus.com
    www.travelwithknowledge.com

But yeah it's a popular keyword for domains.

I like the name. It's kind of funny in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, since it does rhyme with "evil doer." I think that fits with the informal kind of social networking site that you're trying to build.

The logo is clever. I like how the airplane is used for the letter T.

The travel industry is a billion dollar industry and I was wondering if this site could ever lean towards profit and if so how?
I think there is potential. I'm not a web guru, but I would think there are enough businesses out there that might be interested in advertising on your site. I'm thinking along the lines of small, independent businesses -- not the big franchises. Say, someone visits the Washington DC area but is looking for local restaurants, not big expensive ones or fast-food franchises.

Of course, there are hotels, bars, tours, and things like luggage companies, etc. There's a lot of potential there. I'd like to see the personal touch on travel, not the hotels.com or expedia.com kind of rent-a-room stuff. It would be awfully hard to compete with them anyways unless you had lots of money and staff.

One thing I noticed after I went to a couple of pages: I clicked on the traveldoer logo thinking I would go back to the home page. Even though there is a tab that says "Home" I managed not to see it, and instead clicked on the logo. You might think about linking the logo to the home page as well. I find that I've gotten used to seeing that on a lot of websites and now I expect it. A minor thing.

Wow that's funny, I can't even see the logo (along with the entire header) in FF! You started talking about the logo and I said "What logo?" and "I wonder why there's a big empy space at the top?"

So yeah, cross-browser compatability would be important

Personally i like it, a website has to 'grab me' the moment i see it if i want to have a look and yours certainly does that.

Potentially it can be big, but as previously stated there are plenty of 'reputable' travel sites, which is not saying yours isn't but you'll have to put an enormous amount of time and effort and all the marketing you can get.

    Good luck, and stay dedicated!

Oh wow, it was Adblock Plus that was hiding the header div. Dunno why that would be... strange, very strange.

    What about the following name?

    TripType.com

I also own that one... Is that better then Traveldoer?
I wanted the name to be short, simple, tasteful and catchy...doesnt everybody lol?
Sorry I had a family emergency and I couldn't respond sooner.

I apprecaite all of your comments and will consider everything. I will move the images to a folder outside the ad folder just in case that was the problem.

WikiTravel doesn't allow users to talk to eachother about Travel or ask questions or give advice or take polls or post user pics, ect. Wiki is a onesided travel option. Useful but onesided nonetheless. Also on a preference note: Wiki puts too much info and clutter on their pages.

To be pessimistic I would have to say that think about w*k*pedia and where it went wrong. Too many poeple able to put in there opinions, professed as fact so that it is now considered unreliable, even by its founder.

And if you want to make sure the details submitted are reasonably accurate, then it may increase your overheads dramatically, to monitor it all.

not a bad idea though so, good luck.

Just to add this link: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Main_Page - only people with at least a bachelor degree can contribute. Seems a much better idea.

Preference given to BSers... HA! That is classic. I know BSers who would love nothing more than to desecrate an elitist site like this just the prove the point that education level doesn't correlate with good behavior.

But I digress... and hijack the thread... my apologies...

No problem Hijack away, its kinda on the subject. After much deliberation with my family and friends I have decided to keep the Traveldoer.com name. Everyone I know was extremely disappointed when I told them I was going to change the name to TripType.com. They thought the first name was much more original and catchy. A doer is as quoted from the Office dictionary a go-getter and “somebody who is active in doing things rather than just thinking or talking about them.” I was setback a few with the evildoer reference but only a negative think would associate such. A Traveldoer in new terms is someone who does Travel and I agree with my peers to keep it. I will however take the suggestion to capitalize the d in doer to make TravelDoer. Thanks for the help, lovely peeps.
