flickering neon lights...best way to go about this?

I've designed a header graphic for a client and basically it's a view of the city with a huge neon sign that spells out the name of their group (band). However, they want the bulbs around the neon sign to flicker on and off...like an old sleazy motel sign if you get what I mean. What would be the best way to go about getting this achieved? I don't know Flash so I'd prefer not to use it. Is there another way?

you could make it to a gif using abobe image ready.

basically duplicate the bulb layer, change color via [ctrl] + [u] and in image ready you can turn the visibility per frame of the duplicated light bulb to visible or invisible, to give it the on and off effect.

otherwise, Flash is your best friend

hope it helps.

Creating animated GIFs with Fireworks is the easiest thing. But if it’s gonna be a large image then Flash might indeed be a better option (along with sime static image as alternative content). Just don’t overuse it.
