It uses the mail() function; it's just an abstraction class for it.

    Does imap_mail work? http://us3.php.net/manual/en/function.imap-mail.php

Also, a search for "smtpmail" in Google produced the following results: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...il&btnG=Search

I would explore some of the things from that search...maybe your web host wants you to send mail using another language....

did you ask him/her why they disabled mail()?

One of my host said they disabled mail() because they didn't want people abusing it sending spam through there server.
Most of my questions/posts are fairly straightforward and simple. I post long verbose messages in an attempt to be thorough.

I suppose, NO. We need connect to SMTP server or sendmail program from PHP and only mail() can connect to it.

Just to let you know, PHPMailer is not a mail() abstraction layer, it directly connects to an SMTP server using the credentials you supply. You could use your ISP SMTP server if you wish.
