    php mysql insert shorthand error

    Code:
    $Qry  = "INSERT INTO tablename  VALUES('$elmnt1','$Date1','$Date2','$option1','$option2','$option3','$option4','$option5')";
    I would like to use the shorthand method above to enter a row in a table. Problem is that I get an error stating: couln count is greater than value count.
    The only difference here is that the value here is missing the first column which is the 'auto increment id' column. If I add the first column and place auto
    in it. I still get an error. What should I put there?

    btw...is anyone else missing the bbcode elements in the posting form?
