    Auto download/ checker scrip

    Hi all,

New here so sorry if its in wrong section but i dont know what language would be used.

Basically there is a new game due out soon and the official website have put up a new page with the download button and link but obviously no client yet as its not yet available.

Cause of the time zone this will most probably be released when i am tucked up inbed so im after some sort of script that will auto refresh/ check the link every 5min and auto start the download when available.

dose anyone know of anything out there? or were i start in creating something like this. I know its possible as someone made something already for the same link but i cant find were it was.

Im familiar with HTML/XHTML,CSS and very basic PHP.

    thanks

No website or script can just go ahead and download to your PC
without some sort of dialog box (are you sure?, open or save-as, etc).
For security, you the user has to physically allow the file to be downloaded.

But it's possible that a PHP script could check to see if the link exists.
If so, the PHP script could email you and let you know.

What is the URL to the link you're looking for?

thanks for the fast reply, appreciated.

I don't know exactly how the chap made the script or what it involved as i never read the full topic it most probably wasn't PHP, i was on my iphone in work seen the title and glanced threw and when i got home to get the link he posted the admins of the site removed the thread.

What i am sure of though was that it was able to refresh every 5min untill the link when live and would start the download while you were out as he said.

I understand what you are saying though. In chrome when i click a downloadable file it just starts and saves to my downloads folder.

    Link to download page

p.s. the email script idea could still be very useful though if all else fails.

Is it necessary to check every 5 minutes?
How about maybe once every 6 hours, or once every 12 hours?

Here is a PHP method to see if a site exists.
You could experiment with this to check the status of the download link.
Maybe find a "good" download link for something else, and compare.

If that script can successfully detect a "good" download link VS a "bad" download link,
then you have the main part working. The next part is to do the email, and the
final part is to execute with a CRON job or another webpage you have that gets
regular visitors. A webpage that gets a flow of visitors throughout the day and night
can be used to trigger the other script.

The chap replied to me and gave me the link,
It's an excel spreadsheet that will check every 5 mins to see if the file (currently 404 link from the download page) exists, then grabs it if it does. It most probably uses a VBA script.*

Thanks for all your help I will look into the link you gave me as I would like to try something like this for something else. Do you have a link for a guide on how to do a automated email notification*

Whatever means you do to execute the script also sends the email.
I'll play around with it and see if I can provide an example later tonight.

That script I tested (the one with the link I provided) sees the site as "active".
It's looking at the URL (base domain), so it's active. It doesn't care if the file
in the link doesn't exist ... it only cares that the domain exists.

So I guess that won't work.
