garbage chars in msword file in SIMPLE(php, mysql, apache, SUSE) package

    Hi
we are using SIMPLE package for virtual learning.

it has a section where student or staff can upload text, msword documents, pdf, jpg and html files. all type of files working fine instead of msword doc files.

it is working fine on windows with default xampp installation.

on opensuse 10 uploading goes without any error but when the same file is downloaded it ask for type of encoding. no matter what kind of encoding is selected it produce just garbage characters .
files are stored in mysql databases.

as it is working on windows machine but not on linux so it may be something to do with apache or php on linux. please help

    thanks

It is likely a problem with escaping special characters and the magic_quotes_runtime setting. What does a phpinfo(); statement show for all the magic_quotes_xxxxx settings on both the system where it works and on the system where it does not work?
If you are learning PHP, developing PHP code, or debugging PHP code, do yourself a favor and check your web server log for errors and/or turn on full PHP error reporting in php.ini or in a .htaccess file to get PHP to help you.
