    Cool Coders with passport required

    Hello everyone!

I'm posting this to see if anyone out there is interested in working with a small professional team and ready for a unique challenge!
I'm involved in a conservation project that is really trying to capitalize on the internet from web pages, blogs, e-commerce, and, in all honesty, anything else you can think of. We are still very young so there's a real opportunity for you to do some great work and have a load of input.

Because this is such a dynamic project I'm looking for people who are imaginative and adaptable as projects develop and new ones begin. It doesn't matter if you're a 20 year pro, or a graduate just starting out, comments and questions from all are more than welcome.

Now for the fun bit, MONEY.

350 Euros a month! Yes thats right folks! Please bear with me while i explain a bit more.

We are mainly funded by the EU, based in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, a registered charity in the USA, UK and Kenya, a member of Africa Conservation Fund (headed by Dr. Richard Leakey) and are called WildlifeDirect.org - feel free to check us out on the internet.

If you're just into earning money, i don't expect to hear from you. Okay, so I don't expect you would have made it past line 17, so for all you others who have read this far and fancy being involved in something very new, and very different, then drop me a line or post your portfolio (URL), CV and anything else you think may be pertinent over to me.

Look forward to hearing from you, and good luck!!

    A couple of questions:
#1 where does a passport come into it?
#2 how much work are you expecting to get for your 350 Euros a month?

    Hi there.

Hamid, great to hear from you and i'll get back to you as soon as i can with a few more details.

NancyJ - well... the passport comes in because we're based in Kenya and the DRC. We have had a few glitches with communication using out-sourced coders so we're after someone to come out here. As for what's expected, well everything you can do, and a few things you can't.

For 350 euros a month good luck at getting someone to go out there. That doesn't even pay for a plane ticket there. I know I wouldn't pack up and leave everything behind for just 350 a month. Working here in Texas a minimum wage job at 5.15 dollars an hour at 40 hours a week you would make about 800 US dollars a month.

350 Euros ($470) will go much further in either of the countries mentioned though, and some people are more interested in helping others and what could be pretty good experience (looks better on a CV than working in McDonalds) than in money.

Yeah you are probably right, just giving my opinion from an American.

Can we please lay off the "good luck finding someone" attitude in your responses? I think there's a more civilized way to say that the pay may be low.

    Thanks

Airfares from many places will be the equivalent to three or four months pay at that rate which would rule out anyone from those countries considering it at all unless the airfares were included (which hasn't been mentioned). Transportation costs from nearby countries would be a lot lower and so the offer would probably be more of interest to people already in Africa.

What he doesnt mention (but told me by IM) - not sure why this isnt included as it obviously makes the position look more attractive - is that travel and accomodation are paid for.

    Cool

Good point NancyJ - thats what i get for rushing in

To help clarify a few other points... yes the pay is low. Very low by usual standards.

The reason for this is that we are a conservation charity working and living in Africa. As GJay pointed out - thanks GJay -, that money goes a lot further here than you would imagine and the experience of living here, and helping, you get for free.

For the most part you will only need money for food, drink and any other incidentals that you wish grab as travel and accommodation are all taken care of, that includes a return flight.

Hope this helps clear things up, and any questions feel free to get in touch.

    Cheers!

that is a great point! as quoted by someone, the best things in life are free...
for people from the UK or who know what comic relief is.. you could experience what the celebs do in person it would show you how much things are appreciated in Africa, it was sad to see the stuff on comic relief this year and as i get older it doesnt get easier to watch, next year i plan on doing some charity events for comic relief, for example a sponsered boilled egg eating compition, with prizes donated to us by local companys (bars offer free drinks upto 30GPB or whatever) - the point of this reply by helping people less fortunate than yourself is a greater prize than any salary

If I may chime in here (and I’m not gonna start a flame war): I thought this offer was really good actually and sounded very professional. Sure for American or European standards the payment isn’t very high but if I had the time I would so totally do it.

All you capitalists out there: life’s not only about money, you know? And we could all do our part in helping African countries (or nature) and not asking for even more money from them before thinking about it.

And how often do we get the chance to travel the world and get to know Africa? If I were flexible enough at the moment I’d seriously consider it. But right now I can just say: Good luck finding someone.

Oh.... If only I was good enough to do that kind of stuff. What I get payed is even less than that a month, and after I pay for bills and food. I have to stretch about $50 through the entire month for luxuries.
