Server Side Includes and folder access

I am having a problem with SSI and I am really needing help.
The page was working fine before, and I have been using SSI for some time now. But we recently protected the directory from off-campus viewers. (I work at a college) When we did that, for some reason, the include files would no longer show up, and no matter what I do, they will NOT show up. If there some reason why restricting access to off campus users would totally mess up the SSI for the users that are trying to view it ON campus? If any one has any idea, please let me know. Thanks.

In what fashion did you protect the files ? + what platform/server are you using ?
    resistance is...

MVC is the current buzz in web application architectures. It comes from event-driven desktop application design and doesn't fit into web application design very well. But luckily nobody really knows what MVC means, so we can call our presentation layer separation mechanism MVC and move on. (Rasmus Lerdorf)
