    Question Shortcut on Desktop

Does anyone know how you can add a shortcut to someone's desktop without using the right mouse click option? Maybe with the click of a text link or button?

    Thanks!

Have a think about this for just a second. What you think would happen if this was possible? How would you feel if you were on the recieving end of something like this?

What's the matter with you?? Have you no respect??
This is the second question I have seen you ask regarding forcing your wants upon an unsuspecting user...

I would ignore you, but I would rather amuse myself by batting you around a little bit... How would you like if I captured your IP# and pwn3d your machine??

BTW: If you are half as slick as you think you are...
You will know how I just captured your IP#...

My apologies if I offended anyone, it certainly wasn't my intension with the posts regarding bookmarks and shortcuts. I definitely would like to be in good standing with the forum.

To be fair, in this thread he did actually specify that the action would be triggered by the user.

which is a good way to conceal your motives - dress it up as user-centric and con us that it's for usability purposes. the difference in making it user-actioned rather than browser-automated is purely down to the event-handler chosen and doesn't really change the core aspect of the script.

in anycase, there's no need to add a "bookmark this page" button, since that functionality already exists through the browser. duplicating it adds nothing to the user experience.

so why bother? seems more likely that you'd really want to automate this if at all, and knowing how that's likely to upset users, you'd want to disguise that. in attempting to ascertain the method, you'd then want to come over all coy and innocent - "really, i'm doing this out of the kindness of my heart. i didn't know it would upset people." call me cynical, but i've seen too much abuse of web features these days to ever really trust anyone asking seemingly innocuous questions - it's all about chancing-it.

Well quite; the day web shortcuts start mysteriously appearing on my desktop I'll be turning off javascript.

My point was that he can't actually force people to click things, so Willy's use of the word 'force' was... well... overly forceful.

I beg to differ... "Maybe with the click of a text link or button" is not specific in the least and leaves the door open to numerous other events such as... onload, onunload, onfocus, onblur, onmouseover, onblitzen...

Just as the "Make this page your Homepage" link was first thought to be an ingenious little bit to extend the UI of a users... but as we all know, it was shortly exploited to be done without intervention from a user... Now using this example of adding shortcuts to the Desktop... How would you like to surf the net and then open your Desktop to find tens, if not hundreds of shortcut icons that were placed there as drivebys??

It's all good... Stick around and learn all you can but do not expect to recieve any help with anything that could potentially be used maliciously... And generally, if someone on this board tries to disuade you from a course of action it is because they are aware of the inherent dangers and are trying to guide you onto the correct path...

I don't have a problem so much with the question (though, why you'd want to do something like this I've no idea), it's more the fact that there is obviously no research done. No attempt to understand the basics of what web development is all about.
