write to text file using XMLHttpRequest?

I heard there is something called XMLHttpRequest that is compatible to all browsers. What does that actually do? Is there something to do with Javascript? Thank you.

basicly this is what's known as AJAX, this allows Javascript to interact with server-side codes like PHP or ASP to run a bit of code to return the value back so if for example you had a PHP script which adds two number together but wanted the final number to show with no page reloads you use AJAX to send the numbers to PHP and then have PHP return the final number and Javascript will show the returned number in lets say a html div so there is no page loads just an instant display of the numbers added together.

    number1 > 2
    number2 > 5
    final number > 7
