That happens to all IE (before version 9) versions when setting opacity (filter alpha) on a text element. The choppiness depends on the font-family and size,
some fonts look better or worse.
The only workaround I know is to live with the blur as you fade in or out, and remove the style filter completely when it reaches 100 to allow the text to appear sharp.
Or leave the text alone, and fade an overlapping layer (a color or image) instead.
