I am new, How do I access an 'includes' file once i am there

I am not a web designer, my designer has been busy, and i need to change a line in my 'includes messages EN php' file. I used filezilla to open it up, i find the file, but i dont know how to get in to the file to change a specific line # to change a sign up message. Can anyone suggest anything to help me. Im sure it is easy, i just dont have the knowledge

    Thank you in advance

Before trying to edit that file I would suggest you download a copy of it in case anything goes wrong. to do this right click on the filename and on the pop up menu choose download. probably better to save it to your desktop so that you can find it more easily.

Please, I would urge you, do not try to edit the file until you have downloaded a backup copy. if it goes wrong for you, you will have to rely on your webdesigner having a back up, which might leave you vulnerable.

To view or edit the file:
I right click on the filename and selct view/edit from the popup menu. it opens in the text editor I set in the settings (wordpad), and when I make the changes and save, I then close the file. Filezilla then asks if I want to reupload it to the server and I click 'ok'. job done.

when you try that have you got a specific problem?

I guess i didnt have the text editor set. so i set wordpad to it. Then i edited the line that i needed corrected. I saved the file in wordpad. I then clicked exit. So my wordpad is now closed. I went to filezilla, and i then dont know the proper procedure to implement the new changes to get the new file to upload. I right clicked on the messages.EN. file, and i clicked on 'edit'. It gave me a message that says "A file with that name is already being edited. Discard the old file and download the new file?" Then it gives me two options, yes or no. I dont want to mess anything up, so i chose to do nothing until i receive a response from you again.

Thank you very much for your help!

ah, you have a newer version of Filezilla than the one I normally use. I have the new one on the wireless pc downstairs so I shall take a refresher and come back to you.

In the meantime, it might be an idea to make sure you have that wordpad file, which you described as closed, defiantely saved somewhere. Then no matter what you do with Filezilla with the next stage required, you will still have the txt file to back-up from.

OK, on mine, when I have downloaded the file and edited it, then closed it, I get a small dialog box.

    It says:

a file previously opened has been changed: nameOfFile.txt (for example).
Upload this file back to the server?
checkbox: Finish editing and delete local file YES/No

select whichever you wish. Yes means that it will upload it back to the server. the check box selection dictates that you finish editing and delete the local (downloaded for editing), file.

if you wanted to continue editing the file, you should not check the checkbox so that you can make more edits and upload from your pc, without having to download the file from the server for each change you want to make.

I hope I have explained this well enough. if not then pm me again and we can discuss further.

    Edit:
In filezilla, you can also go to the top taskbar and click on 'File'->Show files currently being edited.
Select the one you want and click 'Edit'

Thank you very much! That was very helpful and it worked just as you said.

Here is my website, www.racewaybids.com, the problem i was trying to change was the sign up message after you signed up. It used to tell the user that registration was complete and that an email was sent to ..users email address... when in fact they still had to go to their email and confirm it before they could log in. Now they should understand that they need to go to their email and confirm the registration to access their accounts.

This is a very minor change that i needed to do, but i have been on a lot of crappy sites that have tons of those little errors, which in turn make the site not user friendly, and then users dont want to come back. So i have been trying to comb through the site and fix all the little things that would make it look half done. I think i have done that, and i have done little to spread the word, just on a few racing message boards, and i have almost 50 users, and i have only been putting it on random boards for about a week and a half.

Here is a question: what in your opinion, would be the best and fastest and most effective way to spread the word about the site (on the web). I am currently just googling and finding racing message forums, and then signing up and posting threads about the site. It is going ok, so far for the month of december i have over 17000 hits, but i dont know if that is good or bad. I know other sites get millions of hits. Thats what i want!!

Thank you again for your help!! i Greatly appreciate it!!!

Better to start a new thread for that in the appropriate forum. I don't actually know the answer either but will watch with interest.
