You could better start learning simple before you go and integrate advanced techinques to get the layout you want.

www.htmldog.com -- that site isn't very difficult to create, gotta read up on divs and how to use them.

Better advice would be to read up on CSS positioning, differences between block and inline elements (i.e. the document flow), and the float model.

You don't need <div /> to do all aspects of a layout. I think some people forget that CSS applies to all elements on the page sometimes.

A simple, contrived, but relevant example would be a header that is nothing but:

    <h1>Header</h1>

If your logical header is nothing more than that, then wrapping it in a <div /> for use as a CSS hook is wasteful and pointless. Just style the h1... but I'm sure you'll figure all that out.

thanks guys ill check out that info.

Its funny to think that i can code php all day but it will always be a template restricted by a fairly buggy system. however a CSS style sheet is almost boundless as far as matching what you imagine it to be.

Quite simply: you should read this http://css.maxdesign.com.au/selectutorial/

Really, for me personally, reading that was a complete epiphany: the penny finally dropped!

Then read up on float's and positioning as Mr Magnus suggested.

    Kindest Regards,

    Gary

Are you planning on making a website without any table, just CSS? Or are you planning on using both?

A good site I found was http://www.pageresource.com. It has a variety of tutorials on HTML, CSS as wel as Javascript. Also, that site you are trying to make looks like a photoshop sliced page, which is, in my opinion, difficult to recreate using CSS only, especially with cross platform troubles.
