    Notepad too small...

Lately I've run into a problem.. the size of my coded pages.
Notepad is the default text editor that displays everything from the "view source" prompt after right clicking. Is there a way to change the editor that's used when viewing source? I can't just change the associated program for the .txt extention, that won't do it.

Also, please recommend a good text editor that doesn't have too much file size limitation and will not give me the highlighting problems that wordpad does.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Have a GREAT Ariel day!!

Hey great, I'll use your advice on those two and try 'em both.
Now to the real meat and that is: how do I make it so that "View Source" will use one of those programs instead of notepad?
In other words, how do I associate "View Source" to one of them?

Notepad+ has instructions on how to replace the old Notepad with this one. So basically any files associated with the old Notepad will now open up in Notepad+. IE's view source is set to open open up in Notepad so then once you've set up Notepad+ it would now open in that one instead.

I've never tried this, but hey it's worth a shot.

Find the file "notepad.exe" on your computer and rename it to "notepad2.exe". Then copy the executable (.exe) file of your favorite text editor (textpad4.exe) to the same directory and rename it "notepad.exe"

Let me know if it works.

Those are essentially the instructions that Notepad+ gives to replace the old Notepad with that program.

    ...and the winner is...

    Okay, here we go...

I tried all of the above and here's what I found:

    1. Textpad Lots and lots of features;
-- Texpad TOO MANY features; <cheapskate> Not free </cheapskate>

    2. Notepad+ Very customizable; Simple and easy to use; Free
-- Notepad+ The lame looking "N" icon/logo that appears on the taskbar; The inability to use standard windows highlighting colors (red with orange/yellow letters), which was not a problem with Textpad and Metapad. The background and text were customizable but not the highlighting.

    3. Metapad Looks and highlights just like Notepad; The familiar looking notepad icon, only purple... cooooool.
-- Metapad What's most irritating about this program is the way it jumps to the end of long strings and back to the begining of short ones as you highlight down.. just like Wordpad.

So, in review, Spooks, IMHO you made the best choice... Now, if only there was a way to use Metapad's <purple> Notepad </purple> icon on Notepad+... hmmmm, maybe a new thread??? LOL

Now, about setting up to use as notepad for "View Source", bcarl314 is right. Works great.

BTW, if anyone knows how to set the Notepad+ highlighting to windows colors, please let me know.

Im not sure what you mean about the highlight colors. I've set mine to standard windows colors (black font, highlight in black on white font) you can use proportional font if you want to use other colors).

As for the icon you can always change the icon by creating a shortcut to it then right clicking on the shortcut and go to properties and click the change icon button and find the windows set of icons.

You're right about the icon thing.. I gotto do that.

As for the highlight thing, the black hightlight w/ white letters really gets my eyes.. My current scheme gets me dark red highlight with yellow/orange letters on everything but Notepad+, and there seems to be nothing I can do about it.

I noticed one other thing that is now presenting a problem and hopefully you can help: When I copy paste say a URL, it pastes into the Notepad+ txt file as a hot link. I've looked at the options and there's nothing that would make all pastes as straight text... even the font style I'm copying from shows up as it was originally... why? How can I fix this?

TIAFYH (Thanks In Advance For Your Help)

Yeah I noticed that too. Once you save it and open it again the text is back to normal usually.
