    images and SE's

I've been using empty div's to call on my images:
    <div class="cat"></div>
...but of course, I lose the alt attribute that some search engines count as content.
What's the best way to satisfy both?
    Thanks

what advantages are there to your method? i assume you would be assining a background image to the DIV then?

Is the image decoration or information?
Information (charts, graph, etc) should always be <img> tags so that the disabled can get some clue of what they're missing. Idealy you would also include a link to a text explaination of the information.

Decorative images are of no real significance and as such I can't see a problem with using <div>'s.

I take no responsibility for the above nonsense.

    Just decoration....

I think the question was in reference to whether or not I should always wrap an img tag in a div floated left|right or float the image tag itself.

    Thanks
