    Unhappy Help I'm a dumbass and have messed up a website

    I'm not a web developer in any shape or form so its not surprising that when a friend asked me to edit some bits on their website, I messed up.

    Only a little bit but I can't work out how to put it right.

    Soo... I used Transmit to put some information in, they wanted some information to be show/hide so I opened the webpage in dreamweaver and derped away, but now for some reason the footer is cut half way, and I don't have the style sheet to be able to change it.. is there anything I can do?

    Hello yazisrad,
    My first suggestion would be to restore from the backup you made, or look to find a backup somewhere (on the server?).

    You mention not having the style sheet to be able to change it but you've managed to edit something so you do have access to whatever you broke.

    For us to be any help, we would need to see the site. Give us a link, maybe it's something simple.
    Validate often DURING development - Use it like a splelchecker | Debug during Development |Write it for FireFox, ignore IE
    Use the right DocType | Validate your markup | Validate your CSS | Why validating is good | Why tables are bad

    http://www.naslegalltd.co.uk/employment.html

    I know its because I've taken out the testimonials that are featured on the other pages but I can't see any code which is keeping the divide down the page (theres a really thin grey line)

    <p>The Working Time Regulations (1998) govern the hours you can work. They determine your maximum weekly working time, pattern of work and holidays, plus the rest periods you must be given daily and weekly.</p>

        <h3><img src="img/bulletpoint.png" width="8" height="9" alt="bulletpoint" style="margin-right:5px;" /> Holidays </h3>

    <p>Your employer must include details of your holidays and holiday pay entitlement in:</p>

        <h3><img src="img/bulletpoint.png" width="8" height="9" alt="bulletpoint" style="margin-right:5px;" /> Notice and Rights </h3>

    <p>Both you and your employer are normally entitled to a minimum period of notice of termination of employment. After one month's employment, you must give your employer at least one week's notice; this minimum is unaffected by longer service.</p>

    <p>Your employer must give you:</p>
    <p>-At least one week's notice after one month's employment</p>
    <p>-Two weeks after two years</p>
    <p>-Three weeks after three years and so on up to 12 weeks after 12 years or more</p>

    <p>However, you and your employer will be entitled to a longer period of notice than the statutory minimum if this is provided for in the contact of employment.</p>

    <p><u>Action to take</u></p>
    <p>In order to bring a claim for unfair dismissal you must have at least one year's continuous service before you can make a complaint to the employment tribunal.
    Please note however where you would like to bring a claim for automatic unfair dismissal then there is no length of service requirement.</p>

    <p><u>Time limits</u></p>
    <p>A complaint for unfair dismissal must be received by the Employment tribunal 3 months less one day from the date of your dismissal.
    For example if you were dismissed from your employment on the 10th January 2012 then you would have until 9th April 2011 within which to submit your claim to the employment tribunal.</p>

    <p>Other kinds of dismissal include:</p>

    <h3><img src="img/bulletpoint.png" width="8" height="9" alt="bulletpoint" style="margin-right:5px;" />Constructive Dismissal </h3>

    <p>If your employers actions constitute a fundamental breach of your contract then you are entitled to leave your job and make a claim for Constructive dismissal.</p>

    <p><u>Time Limits</u></p>
    <p>Please note that the time limit to bring a claim for Constructive dismissal is three months less one day from the effective date of termination.</p>

    <p>* Gross Misconduct-This a single act of misconduct which is serious enough on its own to justify the employee's immediate dismissal. As there is no actual definition of this type of conduct it is up to the employer to define what acts constitute gross misconduct.</p>

    	<div style="margin-top:5px; margin-left:25px; display:none;">
                  <p>Redundancies are becoming quite common in this day and age where employers are unable to retain their workforce due to a downturn in business.</p>

    <p><u>What is a redundancy?</u></p>

    <p>A redundancy is a dismissal for a reason not related to the individual concerned or for a number of reasons all of which are not so related.</p>

    <p><u>How can your employer assist you in this process?</u></p>
    <p>Ideally your employer should consult you over this issue. The redundancy selection criteria arrived at should be objective wherever possible to ensure that the process is conducted fairly.

    Where your employer has failed to consult you or follow a fair procedure then you may have a claim for unfair dismissal and you may be entitled to compensation.</p>

    <p><u>Redundancy payments</u></p>

    <p>Where you have been employed for over two years then you may be entitled to a redundancy payment.</p>

    This should fix it, see the missing closing tags I've added that are highlighted in red. I think when you were editing out the testimonials you just cut too much.

    Code:

            </div><!-- END About Us -->

        </div><!-- END Content -->

        <div id="widget"><!-- START Submenu -->
          <div class="subWidget"><!-- START Some text -->

          </div></div></div><!-- END Some text -->

      </div><!-- END Submenu -->

    </div><!-- END Main -->
    </div>
    </div>

    <div id="footer"><!-- START Footer -->

          <div class="footerContent"><!-- START footerContent  -->

                <p>A Company registered in England and Wales under Company number 7334851.
            A list of directors is available for inspection at the registered office.

            </p>

        </div><!-- END footerContent  -->

    </div><!-- END Footer -->

    </div></div></div></div>

    For future reference, the validator shows the missing tags. See the links about validation in my signature line below.

    .
    Validate often DURING development - Use it like a splelchecker | Debug during Development |Write it for FireFox, ignore IE
    Use the right DocType | Validate your markup | Validate your CSS | Why validating is good | Why tables are bad

    Now what good would that do anyone? :P We as developers make plenty of mistakes, it's how you learn from them that matters.
