    Make the label display as block element or float it, and assign dimensions accordingly. To remove the text use negative text indent.

    The larger gap between the label and the input probably comes from the default top margin of the paragraph around the input. Since this ain’t no real paragraph anyway it makes no sense to use this element, so remove it and replace it by a plain line break (<br />) after the label.
