    why cant i increase width???

    i'm trying to increase the width of the sidebar from 240 to 250px but when i do the sidebar gets bounced down to the bottom of the page even though it appears there's room for another 10px. i cant figure out why thats happening event though i've looked at the margins of the post content.

    here's the current css for sidebar:

    Code:
    #primary, #secondary {
    background:none repeat scroll 0 0 red;
    width:240px;
    float:right;
    overflow:hidden;
    }
    please advise how to fix. thanks!

    Need a link to your page, ideally, or your whole html and css.

    So, how am I supposed to see what the page looks like from this small snippet of CSS? Have you consulted Firebug (or similar developer tools in other browsers) yet? It may show some hidden margins or other rules that may override that one.

    Put your #primary div before #container div in html markup oder and then remove width:100%; from width:100%;. Refer http://bonrouge.com/2c-hf-fluid%28r%29.php

    hmmm, well i'm using the wordpress default template and don't really want to be moving divs around from their original order because when an update to the template comes, it might screw things up.

    i cant just add !important to one of the css items instead? if so, which one???

    Not really! The files you need to change are under your current themes folder.

    Anyway, in your current setup, try
    Code:
    #container {
    float:left;
    margin-bottom:0;
    margin-left:0;
    /*margin-right:-240px;*/
    margin-top:0;
    width:680px;
    }
    #content{
    ........
    margin-right:0;
    }
    #primary{
    ........
    width:250px;
    }
