Semantic markup - looking for an element type

My web site is one that discusses business theory. I reference companies as illustrations.

References typically take the form [Name: (Stock symbol)].

I would like to use CSS to highlight the company references. I have created a class called "company" and use <span> to apply the style to the company name and stock symbol.

I was wondering, though, if there's an HTML/XHTML element that I could use instead of the span/class combination.

    Thank you for any suggestions.
