[website] Clicking links and not reloading whole page

Okay so, the title doesn't really give my question justice..

Most websites have a navigation and a "textarea" for the content. When someone clicks a link, that link and its content is reloaded into the textarea without the entire page reloading (like the main layout image).

My question is, how do I do this?

I know you can do it with Ajax (from what I've googled), but I know this is possible with HTML/CSS because I've done it before, although it was a couple of years ago.

    Please help.

I think it might be as simple as adding a code into the a href part, but I can't remember.

Thanks for any advice you may provide.
