    Need help with a Form

Okay, I am a total NEWBIE to all of this coding. I can do VERY limited changes to already created html code. (Change colors, etc). Nothing fancy. I created a form in Freedback that is PERFECT, just what I want...but I don't want the info going THROUGH them. I know, I know...then I should write it myself. BUT, I don't know how. So I cut and pasted it and have tried removing every link I see to Freedback and replacing it with my email address and its not working. If I post the code here can someone PLEASE tell me if what I am trying to do is even possible and if they wouldn't mind, tell me what to pull out and what to replace it with. All I want is for the form answers to come to me via email without going through freedback. Also, once they hit submit, I want it to go back to my home page. I have spent weeks trying to get this far and am beyond frustrated. Here is the original code. Thanks for even looking at this. Hope I am posting in the right area, if not I apologize. Mandy

PS If anyone could also refer me to any helpful books to teach myself html code I would greatly appreciate it! (I have four young children so learning at home is my only option right now. )

    Code:
    <!-- Begin Freedback Form -->
<!-- DO NOT EDIT YOUR FORM HERE, PLEASE LOG IN AND EDIT AT FREEDBACK.COM -->form enctype="multipart/form-data" method="post" action="http://www.freedback.com/mail.php" accept-charset="UTF-8">

I believe you would need to create a Perl/cgi bin that would take the elements in the form ad write it out and mail it to you. I dont know if you can just email everything to yourself. I could be wrong. I would google perl/cgi to start off with. Not sure if this is too much for you to learn but i believe that is what you nedd. Sorry i couldnt help more.

Take a look at this. It is very popular to use, customizable, and is probably supported by your web host.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I think after much reading, the perl/cgi is OVER MY HEAD. So I will gonna check out the site and see if that works. I will try and get something up and running and then try and comprehend the perl/cgi. For now it is like reading Latin to me! But I want to learn. Thanks again!

    Hi Mandy,

All your are trying to do it to have a script, which will process that form data and send it to your email account. Then it can redrect the person to a page confirming that the form was submitted and then, redirecting them to your homepage.

The form script you would best need is 'nms formmail'. Having heard FishMonger (Perl forum Moderator), say it numerous times: You should avoid scriptarchive.com/formmail.html. That one is old code and so buggy that not even the author supports it.

I'll search for the formmail thing for you. Maybe it seems like its over your head but really, you would need only one script. In fact, if you can wait until Monday, I'll try to modify one that I have which will do what you want.

    Can you wait??

    bazz

PS, can you go to your first post and put the code into [ code ] ...form here ... [ / code ] tags. (without the spaces). Thanks

It may be old, but I have never had any issues with it. Always worked perfectly for me.

Are you looking for this? http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/scripts.shtml

well thats the link though I don't recall which item it is.

I have another script, which I built myself - with help from the perl forum - and it should perform as required, if nms is too advanced for this stage of Mandy's learning.

What is involved in the NMS?

    Never used it.

In Formmail, you just create a form, set Formmail.pl as the action, give the inputs a name, and add a submit button... That's really it.

    Is NMS more complicated?

    Bazz...

I am in NO HURRY. Trust me, my whole site has been MONTHS in the process and while something is up on the web, its not what I want. I just used iweb to get it up so I could take orders until I had time to put something more together. I can definitely wait another week for "help". I ta'ed a VERY basic web design class back in 2001 and all we used was a Netscape Composer program where you could DESIGN as you went and the program filled in the code. When I went to do this, I thought I was a pro and quickly learned, I NEEDED to know WAY more than how to hit ENTER.

Now I am trying to learn everything I can cram into my head to get a form up and working that I can maintain myself. I keep hoping it will all "click" so to speak, but so far I am getting a bit lost.

Now as to your question about getting rid of the spaces. This is probably one of those things everyone should know...but I don't. Do you mean go through and literally delete all spacing within the code, or something else. Please forgive me for my complete ignorance in this and if I begin to frustrate ya just let me know...I have come to the conclusion I may be in over my head a bit but I will try! Thanks! PS I will start deleting as soon as I know I am understanding you correctly!

Thanks! PS I will start deleting as soon as I know I am understanding you correctly!
bazz said to put your source code from your post between [ code] tag and [ /code] tag but to remove the spaces between '[' and 'c' or '/' when you do this,
you can edit your post, #1, to do that. Is more ease to read,

I keep hoping it will all "click" so to speak, but so far I am getting a bit lost.
if you intend to use perl to do this I suggest to post this in the perl forum or to ask one of the moderators to move this thread there. This way you can get more help then here in solving this problem.

    regards
