    My website

First off I would like to establish the fact that I am an absolute noob to coding, I know basic HTML and that is about it.

I am starting a website, not an e-commerce website but a website that will be very CONTENT oriented. I have seen on websites where it shows most recent forum threads and other things similar to that, most recent stories etc. etc.

My question is how do you do this? Do I need to manually code this, or is this something dreamweaver can do for me, or another application?

Also any suggestions on how to go about starting this endeavor. Right now I'm starting off with dreamweaver and a web template and trying to make a masterpiece only knowing HTML. Is there any free software I could make great use of? or any other useful information that someone like me ought to know?

Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

Ill answer your questions in reverse order because I belive my answer to your second question is more important.

Also any suggestions on how to go about starting this endeavor. Right now I'm starting off with dreamweaver and a web template and trying to make a masterpiece only knowing HTML. Notepad is free and is all you need for making a website! But since u already have dreamweaver i suggest you stop using the "disign view" and to switch over to "code view". Now, since you are new you may think why? design view seems so much easier? the reason is that design view will output very bad code making your site have weerd display problems across diffrent browsers. the code will also make it harder for people with disabilities to navigate through your site. Further more the bad code will not optimize your search engine results. If this is not enough of a reason I am sure others can offer thousands more!
So now that i convinced you to learn to make proper code, all you go to do is head over to http://www.w3schools.com and complete there tutorials on html and css. once you have done this u can look for more advanced tutorials on topic related issuies such as making a layout.

My question is how do you do this? Do I need to manually code this, or is this something dreamweaver can do for me, or another application?
I don't think you realize how much work must go into making a website. Although showing a section with "most viewed" or "most recent" articles may seam like a simple task, it is actually not.

First thing you would do is make the html and css to display the section how you want it. this should not be to hard. Once that is done you will need some knowledge of php and make a script that will automaticly update the "most viewed" section of your html.

so, the simple answer is: If you want to do this you will need to spend some time learning how to write proper HTML/CSS code, then move onto PHP. Clicking around dreamweavers design view wont help much for anything .

The good news is, you're not alone!

You have the whole internet at your disposal. I say go for it, and if you get stuck, look it up on the web, or come here with your questions - there are lots of people willing to answer them for you!

    Welcome, and good luck

PHP Tip: If you want to use short tags (<? or <?=$var) then make sure short_open_tag is set to "1". It really helps.

Uhm… sounds like some kind of blog software might be your choice? They have been coded already and there are a lot of skins available to start off with. The important thing is that you have such automated processes like most recent posts etc. are built in (since this is really some server side script, not just HTML), and you don’t have to learn everything from scratch (just HTML is the easier part of all that).

If you’ve learned more HTML and CSS you can then create your own design etc.

Wordpress is probably the most widely used blog software.
