    CSS body problems.

    Hello everybody, 'tis my first post. I'm having some trouble with the CSS on a new page I'm doing. I made a test set up...
    Test Page
    and the CSS is:
    Code:
    body {background-color: rgb(57,57,57)}
    h1 {color: #ffffff}
    h1 {text-align: center}
    h1 {font-family: times}
    p {color: #ffffff}
    p {font-family: times}
    .centeredImage
       {
       text-align:center;
       margin-top:0px;
       margin-bottom:0px;
       padding:0px;
       }
    The problem is that only the lines with stuff on them have a black background, the rest is white. Can you help me?
    Oh, now there's another problem... that page doesn't even render..... jeeez.

    Your page works fine with an embedded stylesheet.
    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
    <head>
    <title>Sanguine Gryphon Classes</title>
    <meta name="generator" content="Bluefish 1.0.4"/>
    <meta name="author" content="Julian Crouse-Brezon"/>
    <meta name="date" content="2006-11-05T14:46:49-0500"/>
    <meta name="copyright" content="Copyright &copy; The Sanguine Gryphon"/>
    <meta name="keywords" content="wool, yarn, knitting, knit, nit, classes, sanguine, gryphon, sangine, griffin, griphon, sangine, clases, classes, gryfin, fibers, classes, fiber"/>
    <meta name="description" content="The Sanguine Gryphon offers fiber arts supplies, classes, and information."/>
    <meta name="ROBOTS" content="INDEX, NOFOLLOW"/>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="application/xhtml+xml; charset=UTF-8"/>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css"/>
    <style type="text/css">
    body {background-color: rgb(57,57,57)}
    h1 {color: #ffffff}
    h1 {text-align: center}
    h1 {font-family: times}
    p {color: #ffffff}
    p {font-family: times}
    .centeredImage
       {
       text-align:center;
       margin-top:0px;
       margin-bottom:0px;
       padding:0px;
       }
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>Why on Earth isn't the WHOLE background grey?</p>
    </body>
    </html>
    I think it might to do with a permissions problem though because if you go to the stylesheet directly you get a 400 error http://www.sanguinegryphon.com/SGStylesheet.css

    Does the page render for you at all? I've learned (on IRC #html) that .xhtml only works if you change the "mimetype" on the server...

    I'll just do the .html thing. About permissions: for some reason, gFTP makes everything unaccessible on certain files, then I have to change them automatically, might be ubuntu's fault....

    Ironically IE understands the .xhtml extension. Firefox reads it as a text file. Then again I think it will even render text files as html files, IE that is.

    So, would I be better off using .html, or figuring out how to make my server thingy work? Cause I don't know how to make the server change the mimetype.
