There are a whole slew of 3d packages out there. Depending on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. A good free one is Blender...of the high end ones I prefer Lightwave. But 3ds max seems to be the beginners choice...then if you would rather sculpt in 3d...zbrush is a really powerful and fun app....below is a list of popular 3d packages...Look through them and decide what best suites your needs.

Take a look at blender, its free and very powerful although a bit complex if you're new to 3d graphics, the best thing about it is all the people at blenderartists.org who are very willing to help people out starting out with blender.

Also google sketchup is great way to start in 3d, its very simple to use and i think you can export .obj's from the free version. these can be imported into jitter's

as you've probably heard 50k times just learn the techniques cause the program doesn't technicaly matter!

with that being said, I love maya. Its got its bugs, but it comes with mental ray!! ad I am a render guy so that is important. O ya the animation is better in my opinion. Laying out UVS and such is better in Max. Try them all.

If you like ani or render maya will be easier to start with though cause of the free mental ray and better animation options.

When I started, I used Maya, but found Blender has a plugin to basically conform to the way you would use Maya, so they're essentially almost the same.

Maya along with 3D Studio Max is very helpful for this type of job. You can try any of these to perform your job.

both 3D-max and maya are very good but as far may experiences is maya is much complicated and more complexed tool as compare to 3D-max so if you are a new user then i suggest you should start with 3D-max
