    Make your own web space

This is probably a stupid question, but is it possible to set up a website without going through a hosting company? Like hosting it on your own server?

Sure, but you need to have a constant connection to the internet,
and a static IP address, because a connection through an ISP changes.
Your ISP probably won't let you run a webhost through them, so you'll need
to find another company that does. Probably expensive.

But, if you want to have an "intranet" in your own house, that would be
free, and a good way to learn all about servers, php, Perl, etc.

Network all of your home computers together and be your own webhost.

And if it isn't anything too serious, like you want to be able to access your intranet over the internet or something you can use a dynamic DNS service if you don't have a static IP address.
