It's been said before... why reinvent the wheel?

A forum is probably one of the hardest things to code - it would take months, and probably be very insecure at the end of it.

Why not use something like vBulletin (what CF uses), or Invision?

You can even get Invision Free... which is, free.

I would download the free phpBB forum at www.phpbb.com

I have it set up on 2 sites and it is very nice, with lots of styles to choose from. They also have a very active forum on phpbb.com to help you with questions. Coding one from scratch would be too much work.

They all have control panels, you just basically log into it and you can manage the members/sections etc, and edit the style.

Why don't you just install it, then you'll see lol!?

Your own server... eg. on this site the administrators will have another link to go to the admin control panel at the top somewhere, and in there they'll be able to customise it how they want.

There'll be instructions.... what forum was it? Normally you just upload, config to your database, and maybe chmod some files.

You have only downloaded one of the styles for phpBB, not the forum. You must download phpBB 2.0.19 which comes with the subSilver default style plus instructions on how to upload to server.

I wouldn't pick a style until you have the forum up and running.

It took me less than 1 hour to get mine up and running, and then I did lots of tweaking over a few days. But I also know HTML,CSS,PHP and some MySQL.

Once you have your forum installed and working you will have to edit some of the files to suit your needs. Such as logos, copyright info, terms of service, maybe Google Adsense code, etc.

I recommend you join the phpBB forums, you will get lots of help over there. I also post on the phpBB forums for help and answering questions.
