Best way to make coupons for my site?

I am building a website for a local retailer, and they would like to put a monthly coupon for their site. Something that they can change every month. I was hoping someone could please give me some advice? I mean, would I use Microsoft Publisher, or some online service?

Also, would it have to be in an image format, so customers can print it out?

I would sincerely appreciate any help!

What are the rules to the coupon?

    1) Can someone print out 10 of them and keep them in their car ... use them multiple times?
    2) Can someone print out a few and hand them out to friends?
    3) Will the coupons be coded in any way so they can only be used once and not duplicated?
    4) Does the retailer already have some sort of coding system?
    5) Can a person display the coupon on their smartphone and show it to the clerk when they buy something?

    Some more thoughts ...
    Not everyone has a printer.
    Not everyone has a smartphone.
Not everyone has email, or not willing to give out their email.
Some do not wish to give out their cell phone number for a 'text message coupon', so consider that.

Give us a complete set of specifications and rules.

What you tell us will determine how this should be done.

    Hmmm. Good questions. Thanks.

Well, it is a fireplace store, so I believe it will just be something simple like . . . . .”10% Off Any Accessories with Coupon”, or “10% off Lopi Stove with Coupon”
. I mean there will probably just be one coupon up there at a time, changing every month.

My goal is to figure out how to allow them to create their own coupons for the website. I can have them keep the same filename, and just replace it with the new coupon every month via ftp . . . . but my dilemna is. . . I don’t know what type of software they should use to create their coupon ( MS Word, Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, something else)?

I have also considered 2 options:
    1) I could have them upload it as a pdf (or something else, recommendations welcome!).
    2) I could have a nice “coupon” div set up on a page, and use php/ mysql to let them edit their content in this div (text and images), but then I would just have a page with a div (I can have a nice border and background), but then, what the customer do? Just print the whole page?

I hope I explained well enough what I am trying to accomplish. I understand and appreciate the questions that you asked (and hadn’t thought about most of them), but as you can see, I am just trying to come up with something simple, kind of like something that a pizzeria might have.

Any direction or suggestions would be appreciated.

If you go the route of having people print them out, you could use PHP to display a graphic image (coupon with image and text) on the user's browser and they can just print it on a printer.

PHP can take a graphic JPG, GIF, PNG image and add text to it (overlay on top). Then, render it as one graphic image on the browser.

So you would have an image of a coupon, say 4 inches wide X 2 inches high with the fireplace store logo on the left and empty white space on the right. A PHP script would take data from a Google Doc spreadsheet and put the necessary text on the image .. then display it on a browser.

I say Google Docs Spreadsheet because anyone with a Google Account and permission to access a spreadsheet could use that to create the coupons. They could enter the text that appears on the coupon, the amount of the coupon, the expiration date, etc.

If you choose to go that route, do these things:
    1) Create a graphic image like I described above.
    2) Make sure you have a Google Account email (you can get one using any email, not only @gmail.com)
    3) Private message me with a link to your graphic image, and your Google Account email (just the email, not any passwords).

I will create an example that you can play with.

NOTE: You can create a JPG image of a coupon using something as simple as MS Paint.
Create it, and print it out on your printer so you can see what the size will look like on paper.
A box that looks like a coupon w/ their logo on the left side and blank space on the right.
Again, something that prints on paper the size of a normal coupon.
Upload that image on your website and PM me with the link to it.
