Best place for Web Hosting?

Hello all,

I have been researching the internet for a good place to host my website and the search results have been overwhelming to say the least.

Some hosts are $2.95 a month with unlimited space and bandwidth while others that offer the same thing are $12 a month.

Some are reviewed as super slow and down while others praise that very same hosting company.

Right now, I thought I had settled on a company (www.westhost.com), but then today I found a ton of bad reviews for them.

Then it seemed like Bluehost was the place to go, but again there were a ton of mixed reviews.

Ok, how about GoDaddy? Nope, same thing.

I realize that you cannot please everybody and there will be both good and bad reviews for each, but how does one choose!?

I liked Westhost because they are apparently a smaller company and I will admit I was swayed by an online article praising them. They are in the higher price range - $12 for unlimited space and bandwidth compared with some of the other hosting sites which claim to offer that for only $2.95 a month.

In all honesty, I'm not really sure who to go with at this point.

Who do you host with? What's your opinion on the situation? I would greatly appreciate any advice and direction on this matter. Thanks!

The issue is that of all subjects, this is probably the one that has been beaten to death, many times. Spending time writing anything more is pretty much futile, as you know there are tons of inputs on the subject. What good is a few more added to the list? Just pick a host that seems decent, and don't sign up for their "10-year paid in advance" package, so you can switch if needed.

Sorry, I checked the forum and didn't see any posted unless I completely missed all the forum threads on this topic.

But, yeah I think I'll just pick one and see what it's like. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

You can always transfer your domain if you don't like it. I loved a couple of my hosting companies but they all go sour at some point. Now I can't find a good one anymore.

I use DreamHost and would highly recommend it. I run my sites on a shared server and have found the control panel very user-friendly. I've also used BlueHost and GoDaddy (when working on clients' websites) and would NOT recommend them. In fact I really don't like the user interface for cPanel (which is used by both).

Only cons with DreamHost:
a.) Sometimes it seems that the MySQL can run slowly (at least on a shared server like mine)
b.) Trying to make changes via SSH can be a hassle, again I think this is worse because I'm on a shared server

The cost for my hosting is about $120 / yr which I believe is a bit more than average but I get to register 1 free domain per year and can host (apparently) as many sites as I'd like on it. They also have a very convenient tech support chat feature as well.

I've been using Hostgator for the past couple of months, and I really enjoy them so far. They have excellent customer service 24 hrs a day (which is excellent for me since I tend to work late at night), their prices are very reasonable, and my site has never been down because of Hostgator. I highly recommend them!
