    Easily updatable pages

    Hello all,

I'm relatively new to web development, but have enough of a fix on html and css, that I have become the go-to web guy for my group of friends and loved ones.

I'm putting together a site for a friend of mine, and I would like to include a "News" page, where she can regularly insert text and photo updates without having to go under the hood so to speak.

I suggested we link her to a blog page, but she's pretty adamant about not wanting a blog.

I don't want to get roped into a situation where I have to update her news page for her every few days.

    What are my/her options?

    Hello Rkic,

Welcome to CodingForums! We're more than glad to help out

Funny you should mention the blog thing actually... while she doesn't want to link to a 'blog page' what you can do (with minimal effort actually) is to create a free wordpress blog, then within your website you can actually install the wordpress plug-in, then strip the wordpress down to absolutely nothing (there is a template called Blank that does this for you) then you can just take the pure text that's being produced from the blog posts and put them into your website

So essentially it's updating the website without having to link to a Blog Page. She just logs into wordpress, types in the news (which can be styled however you want inside of your HTML & CSS) then it gets populated onto the website!

Why make it so complicated? Just install Wordpress (or any other CMS with a news module) and set up the pages by the way of a custom theme. The “blog” would then just not be called “blog” but “news”; but essentially it’s the same anyway.

    Hi VIPStephan,

Would the Wordpress method you describe work for pages that are to be archived as well? I, too, would like to easily display news content on web pages without having to enter a lot of code, but I would like those pages to eventually be linked on a "hidden" sheet for indexing. The news pages would be available on my main page for only a couple of weeks at best. After that, they will still exist, but they will only be avaiable by searching for them on my site.

Hmm. I've never played around with Wordpress. Can I style it with CSS like any other kind of page? In other words, can I insert the wordpress bit into an already styled html/css template I have for her site?

Also, since my friend's page is going to be a commercial page, is it Kosher to use wordpress' infrastructure like that?

Sorry about all the dumb sounding questions, but like I said, I'm only a little ways up the learning curve here

Absolutely. While it may be 'more complicated' It will basically pull posts from wordpress and populate your Html/Css. Also, when people go to visit the page it won't show that it's being populated from wordpress unless people look at the pagesource. (most people will be none-the-wiser)

ex. your address bar will read "http://www.yourwebsite/blog"

It's completely fine and Kosher. Wordpress is a free tool (it has options to pay for features, but it's unnecessary for what you're doing). There's no reprocussions from changing the wordpress format (as long as you're not using somebody else's template, altering it, then claiming it as your own)

Thanks very much for the help DylanBaumannn.

I'll try playing around with it today to see if I can make it work.

I won't be able to get you access to the template right now since I'm at work, however if you can't get it going by later tonight (5 hours from now) I'll hop back on after I finish up here and get you set up with the Blank template and a How-To for integrating it into your HTML/CSS

    hi RKic!

sorry for the late response, I got tied up in a few different projects over the weekend and had completely spaced getting the template to you! Sorry about that!

    digwp.com/2010/02/blank-wordpress-theme/

the template is located here if you want to download it and install it, it removes everything except for the post titles, posts, archives, navigation and basic wordpress includes (such as the blog title & subtitle)
