How do I explain the value of standards to non technical people?

You know, like, appreciating the value of standards-compliant, semantically rich markup, and how it's so much more valuable than having a site which looks pretty in netscape 4 ...

... but how do I explain that to my MD ? Anyone know a good reference, or a couple of paragraphs that just say it all like haiku poetry.

wise man say, he who finds enlightenment through standards-compliant coding, be very much knowledgeable in the ways of the web, when so many are confused and blind.

wise man say, this man should look inside for the words to say to MD, who will listen because he will see and respect the tao of design that is acheived by a person attaining enlightenment of standards-compliancy, and the expression of the innermost chi.

wise man say, there is much beauty in the way a good coder can make his lines flow. This surely great man can do many things that will amaze and wonder those who understand not the way of the true samurai coder.

I'm not sure you can effectively argue the importance of standards to non-techie people. You can relate analagies with automobiles (bumper height for example), or something else common to their lives, but I don't think you can directly emphasize it to them.

    Cars!

I like the cars approach: think along the lines of non-compatible freeways, six different kinds of non-intermixable gas, steering wheels behaving differently in various brand cars; maybe that'll drive the argument home!
    Regards,

Put it in simple terms, like if i was going to explain htpasswrd for authentication i would explain it as a locked box and only the key could open and see inside where as all could see the outside.

    relate to something simple
    scroots
Spammers next time you spam me consider the implications:
    (1) that you will be persuaded by me(in a legitimate mannor)
(2)It is worthless to you, when i have finished
