What sort of charts? And do you have access to the server? What technologies are supported? And what sort of write/read access do you have?

    hi,
personally i would do this with flash, using php or asp to retrieve the dbase info. But i guess it would depend on your flash knowledge, and whether users requiring the plugin would be a problem.
Failing that, you are looking at dynamic gif/png generation (for simple charts), here i would go with php + gd library (this library will be most likely included on paid hosting).
Failing this, a not so good method for generating gifs on the fly would be to use imagemagick (http://www.imagemagick.org), combined again with php. wouldnt recommend this though, its a bit sluggish n' dirty (in my opinion)
there may be other cgi sciptable solutions as well.

I use php rather than asp, so i couldnt tell you what options there are in asp.. may be other possibilities as well, but the above are the ones i would use..

No offence but HAHAHA! You are kidding right? Lol I mean seriously, flash isn't meant for that kind of thing.

Roelf on the other hand is on the right track, this would be easy (no promises) with SVG. I made something similar to make algorithm flow charts once. It converted PSEUDO into a flow chart, although not from a database the way it worked was the same.

    I say go with SVG.

Mhtml, you obviously dont know flash very well..

this sort of thing is precisely the type of thing that flash mx does very well. Using a combination of flash, php and mySQL it is extremely simple to do things like this.

I merely stated that i would do it in flash, and i would. For me, this would be the quickest way of doing it.

My experience in this area: I have been working on a web application which uses flash mx as a frontend, and c executables as a backend, the app is effectively an image editor that allows layers, gradiented masking, drawing, text, etc, auto-image slicing (based on whitespace) & html export.

For charts etc. flash is perfectly good for the job. A few lines of code in flash, a few in php to extract the database info and send back to flash.

Macromedia used to have a product called generator that specifically did this sort of thing server side. It is no longer being developed Why? cos its so easy in flash.

    lol.

I know flash like the back of my hand, been using since v3. Although quite capable of this flash wasn't and isn't primarily developed for doing such as required in this case.

As easy as it is in flash, using ASP and SVG would not only allow for quicker rendering but it would be quicker and more managable as well as being contained to only 2 files, the database and the .asp file.

Also, PHP code tends to be a lot smaller than ASP so "a few lines" would be almost double in ASP for this sort of thing.

Hope I wasn't a little "harsh" in my previous post, I'm usually a nice person..

    no worries
i dont know asp or svg, so this may indeed be the best way to go about this..
i agree with the managability, 2 files are always better than 3, i guess it comes down to what alaios has more of a background in..

i apologise for insulting your flash knowledge, , im new to these forums, so i dont know who's good at what - i mistakenly assumed you were one of them evil flash bashers.

hope i havent got off to a bad start..
