Anyone know anything about this company?

One of my friend's domain names had 'expired' and she hadn't had a renewal notice from the people who registered it. Then we got mail from this company (m e l b o u r n e i t . c o m . a u) who told us we had to renew by 17th April or we would effectively lose the domain. It had passed its renewal date on 17th March. It seems that they were the poeple who had actually registered it on behalf of the first company.

So it is all renewed now but I was wondering if any of you know anyting about them? Are they good, much-of-a-muchness, equal to anyone else, bad etc.

    Bazz ...

This is my guess as to what happened ...

Her domain name expired and (I'll call it Melbourne) Melbourne used it's
spider script to crawl around "whois" ... they saw the expired domain.
So they sent her (the email on whois) and warned about it. Melbourne
probably wasn't related to the initial domain host and your friend just doesn't
remember who the original host was.

In any event, I hope she was able to register for a "reasonable" fee. What they
did isn't exactly illegal, but if they lured her in and charged her mucho fees,
that would be suspicious. Anything over $25USD would be "mucho".

I get letters in the mail (snailmail) from domain hosts recommending I renew
my domain name. They got all of my information from "whois". I just throw
the junk mail in the trash. My domain host charges extra to hide my whois info,
so I just haven't done that yet.

She should now keep all account info from Melbourne. She should also find out
if Melbourne allows the domain to be transfered (in the future). There might be
some small print that makes this a bad deal.

Also ... she should go into the Melbourne domain name account and "hide" all
whois information, and lock the domain so it cannot be switched again without
    her permission.

    Hi Max,

It seems to be that one of the resellers for this company is, in the UK well known. They run a phone directory of a particular colour and are associated with a phone directory in the US which is also colour related. I don't want to name them.

As it turns out, the UK company, which has be a trouble in other ways, failed to notify her that her renewal was due. It seems that the main company as mentioned in my first post, then sent out an email yesterday.

I have read their T&C's and it seems that she does own her domain name and can move it away from them.

It is just a bit worrying for her, when all her busines sstatioery has this domain on it and she would lose business if she had to change domain name.

Once we have actual confirmation that it has been renewed, she will move it to my own domain name registrar who is pretty good.

    oesxyl,

I'm not sure of that myself, but what I imagine they do is
change all of the technical contact info so they have
a fake name, and an email that goes to them.

Someone spidering "whois" will send spam to them and
probably not spend the time to actually visit the website.

I've seen some websites that provide a list of "soon to expire"
    domain names. Like this:
    http://www.networksolutions.com/doma...on/pending.jsp

If I recall, Network Solutions was one of the companies that allegedly
sent me some notices to renew my domain name ... but I'm not hosted with them.

I have the privacy features on my domain name. If you feel like checking the whois, go ahead.

    AE,
So they "prohibit" things ... that's how they cause them not to appear?

But the expiration date still shows ... so if I wanted to take the effort to
visit the website and contact the "webmaster", I could bother you when
it expires ... but I don't think that's what the spiders would normally do.
