1- Choose the right keywords (ex: if your site is about hockey, do not go for "hockey" because there is to much competition)
2- Have good content that is keyword ritch
3- Make use of proper HTML (no tables, valid, ext..)
4- Have good titles with your keywords and put them in h1 tags.
5- Get your keyword into the <title> tag
6- have different keywords for each page of your site.

That's really great advice from srule, but don't forget the basic, submit your site to search engines, and create a lot of links back to your site. Reciprocal links are always good.

I think we may be drifting off topic because he was interested on ON SITE SEO, but none the less, if u have 200 dollars to spare it is a good idea to submit your site to the yahoo directory! this well help google and other search engines find your site a lot quicker and more frequently. You should also submit the site to http://www.dmoz.org/ for the same reason as I just stated about the yahoo directory. Good news is that http://www.dmoz.org/ is free :-).

As far as submitting your site to other directory sites goes it is up to u! When I first got into web development I submitted my site to any directory I could find and guess what? Not one of them has ever sent a user to my site. So just keep in mind that Quality links back to your site are much better then the Quantity of links back!
