Question about domains expired and websites going offline

    Hello all

One of the websites http://www.alc.org.uk I do for had it's domain registration expire over the weekend

My fault I suppose but I idly assumed that I'd get a prompt of some kind as I do with the other domains I have, it occurs to me now that this domain is with LowPriceDomains.com, the people that Websitesource use/recommend

I've now managed to renew the registration but a ghastly generic 'Travel Media Shopping etc' page has appeared in place of the proper website, I'm sure you've seen it before

The technical support at websitesource have told me it's gong to be 24-48 hours before every thing's back to normal, as you can guess I have a furious client with lots of puzzled and confused members bothering them, and email all knocked out

Is this all my fault and my problem or could I have expected more from my chosen webhosts?

Is there anything they can do to speed things up or patch things? Some sort of redirect from wherever theor generic page is to where the regular website is? There's a direct link to the proper website in the cp

I'm a newbie low level type with one paying client and a couple of free sites so this is a first time balls up for me

I think I'll use someone a bit more professional next time around though, on the assumption that I've got what I paid for ...

any cheap but not too cheerful recommendations listened to, MonteCarlo hosting were my last maybe people

thanks for any help, be gentle

I think the duration given to you is ok...as it takes 24-48 for domains to propagate through the Internet.

Having said that though, your hosting company should have warned you that the domain name is about to expire...at the least a month in advance.

The best thing to do in my opinion is to change hosting companies in this case, as it is not really good for your client or yourself.

I personally recommend Servage.net they have excellent support team, and the package is fantastic as you can host as many websites as you want. here is a list of some the features that they provide.

    24/7 Expert Helpdesk
    - Major Bandwidth Providers
    - 24/7 Server Monitoring
    - 99.98% Server Uptime
    - Linux Operating System
    - Secure Server (SSL) Included
    - Host Unlimited Websites! [?]
    - Free Whois Privacy (Optional)
    - 360 GB Web Space (360000 MB) [?]
    - 3600 GB Transfer [?]
    - Unlimited FTP Accounts [?]
    - FTP Access [?]
    - 1000 MySQL Databases (v4 & v5) [?]
    - FTPS (Encrypted FTP)
    - PHP v4.4.4 & PHP v5.2.1 [?]
    - GD Support [?]

    - Microsoft Frontpage Support

If you want to sign up with Servage, please the following coupon "ess" which would give 25gb extra space and bandwidth.

    Cheers,
    ~E

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out

I'm familiar with the time scale but what annoys me is having to look at their generic page

Surely it's within their power to restore the website, the traffic is going somewhere and they can clearly put up their page, so surely they can get the website back up?

LowPriceDomains is Websitesource, same people so it's not like I'm migrating a domain from another webhost surely?

I know how you feel...but most hosting companies have no control whatsoever over domain names...and usually, there is a third party involved with domain name management etc.

So, once a domain name has been modified to serve from a different host, regardless of whether the hosting company manages their own domains or not...it would take 24-48 hours before the modifications take effect throughout the internet.

The reason is due to DNS (Domain Name System) and how they operate. If you are interested in learning about DNS servers and how we use them, such as how regularly they are updated etc...you can start by reading the following page from Wikipedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system

I know that it can be very inconvenient to be standing in the middle between your client and the hosting company...but these are the realities of how the internet work...and that is why....it is extremely important to choose a reliable hosting company if you want to keep your clients happy.

    Thank-you

I'm ok with Domain activation/transfers and the like

In this instance though it seems to me that LowPriceDomains is the same company as Websitesource, their website runs under the websitesource portal and design and colours, the websitesource tech dept renewed the domain name for me

if that's so then they have control over the domain surely? So if it's pointing to this generic page it can be directed to the proper site surely?

And any idea what will happen to emails sent to the various mailboxes while the domain is offline?

tech support has gone all quiet after initial enthusiasm

Here is the current domain registration information (cached/subject to propagation delay) - http://www.networksolutions.com/whoi...ain=alc.org.uk

The actual domain registrar is - www.enom.com LowPriceDomains is just a domain reseller.

If your email contact information in the domain record was correct and you feel that LowPriceDomains failed to contact you (everything is automated anyway) and you feel that they have accepted money from you to renew the domain but have not done so, contact enom.com with your concerns about the LowPriceDomains reseller. If you can prove with enough evidence that LowPriceDomains is not acting honorably (find if there are Better Business Bureau complaints...) you might be able to convince enom.com to move your domain registration out of the LowPriceDomains account and into an enom.com direct account (you might end up paying again, but that would be a small price to pay to solve the problem.)

enom.com can probably also tell you what the actual current domain record is and if the domain name has actually been renewed. Doing a whois through their site gave the same information in the link I gave above, so that is probably the current information at the time of this post.

On the positive side, no one else has bought the domain name so it is still available for you to get back.

Short answer - until you get the domain name back under your control, with the domain record pointing to the name servers where the web site is hosted, the web site and any email sent to that domain is lost.

That just triggered a thought, just try registering that domain name through some other domain registrar. If it is available, you would be able to register it.

If you are learning PHP, developing PHP code, or debugging PHP code, do yourself a favor and check your web server log for errors and/or turn on full PHP error reporting in php.ini or in a .htaccess file to get PHP to help you.

Thanks for that that, that clarifies things for me

So enom have taken the opportunity to stick that sales/links thingy page up then?

This is the final straw for me with Websitesource and LowPriceDomains, the customer service has always been patchy, I've had a ticket open for a week regarding emails being blocked by their anti spam/hacking measures that they're being very half arsed about dealing with

I'm going to shift the whole kit and caboodle upmarket a level I think as soon as I find someone better

and amen to someone else getting it, that was what I thought had happened, that wasn't a nice idea

I've managed to get it back and it's good for another four years, one of the websitesource techies and me stuck two years apiece on early this morning

The LowPriceDomains website is something to behold (in a bad way)

As a 'webmaster' (ahem) should I consider myself responsible for renewing client domains and was I lax in assuming that I/they would get a reminder?

    thanks again

    slight and final update

I've moved to servage as recommended (and used the referral, thanks) and it all looks excellent so far, the phpmyadmin alone seems four times faster so I'm looking forward to getting it all up and running and see what happens

my old lot are yet to resolve a problem where two key people on the committee of my client's organisation have all their email into the websites domain bounced on some sort of relay timeout, the webhosts freely admitted it was due to some blocks they'd put in against spam and since then have done nothing to fix it or even respond despite me sending in everything they've asked for

anyhow, scheduled upgrade today of the control panel that means outage of the control panel and 'other services', which now seem to include anything, ie php not being able to connect to the databases

would you find the below message in reply to me asking what goes on acceptable? academic as I'm well on the way to moving now

    .....
Ticket Subject : or: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect()

    Reply:
    Hi,

We are still in the process of upgrading the control panel software. The
upgrade may not be completed until later today. During that time, your
websites, email, FTP, databases and other services may work intermittently or
not at all. This should all return to normal once the upgrade is completed.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Best Regards,

To help prevent the problem in the future, if your buying the domain only one year at a time, perhaps you might want to just buy it for the next like 2 or 3 years so you don't have to worry about it for a while.
