    Search Engine Optimisation

    Hi,

    Not sure if this is the correct area to place this thread but here it goes.

    I have recentley created a website www.thecainfoundation.com

    I put the keywords and title info in the top of the head.

    Now when you search for Branchio-Oto-Renal Syndrome the site does not come up on google. But when you search for The Cain Foundation it does.

    The people really want it to come up on the first page.
    Anyone got any good tips for me on how to do this?

    Thankyou.

    here is some meta tags from the forums index.php file
    Code:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />
    <meta name="generator" content="vBulletin 3.6.4" />

    <meta name="keywords" content="javascript, php, cgi, xml, css, asp, mysql help, database, webmaster, dhtml" />
    <meta name="description" content="Web coding and development forums. Get help on JavaScript, PHP, CGI, CSS, XML, and more." />

    You'll want to register an account with Google Webmaster Tools and then install a sitemap.xml in order to help the bots to better understand how to crawl your site. (More about sitemaps in my next post below.)

    Meta tags do very little to help rankings. The description is useful for improving clickthroughs when you're ranking... but that's irrelevant if you're not ranking already.

    install a sitemap.xml in order to improve your rankings.
    That's just plain wrong, sitemaps don't improve your rankings, all they do is let Google know where your pages are.

    On top of which they give Google access to all your site even if you have accessibility problems that would prevent access to search engines - so you lose the ability to diagnose any issues on that side of things.

    They can help. Granted, if you make a small, static site for someone, then the sitemap will do nothing but act as a roadmap for what the bots will find on their own.

    OTOH, if you're developing a dynamic site for a client--one that is frequently updated, say with new products or services--then a sitemap can work wonders.

    Case in point: I developed an e-commerce solution for a fashion distributor. They typically add new items quite frequently, so I set up a program and cron job to crawl their site daily and update the sitemap.xml file with new entries. Within a short time, their position on page six of a Google search improved to the number two slot on the first page of results.

    Nevertheless, the point still stands - they can get Google to crawl your site more often, but they don't directly impact on rankings.

    I suspect in the case of your fashion distributor there were other factors that pushed the site to page 1.

    Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go - sitemaps do have their place (although it's arguable that the same job could be achieved by making sure your site is accessible and linked to on a regular basis) - I just don't want people to come along and read this thread, upload an XML sitemap and then sit back scratching their heads when nothing happens.

    Ta, Adam. I've rephrased my first post so as not to give the wrong impression.

    I'm sure google ignores the keywords meta tag. It does however use the description meta tag for it's description (what it says under your result).
    The best things you can do to improve your rankings is have links with your desired phrase in it (like in my sig, croatiankid designs, if you search croatiankid designs, mine's on first, not only because there's not another site that can relate to it, but because there's about a thousand links to it through forum signatures).

    Edit: wow just noticed sitepoint forums took my ranking. ouch lol. However, I expect it to go down eventually since i'm pretty new to sitepoint. The same thing happened when I joined codingforums.

    Yeah that's why I said it's good for improving clickthroughs - but pointless until you've actually got rankings to clickthrough on.

    just noticed sitepoint forums took my ranking
    heh, yeah thats irritating. You may also be interested to know that both codingforums and forumsales outrank you when I do a search in the UK.

    It's probably because I got a lot of links fast, so it's penalizing me. Also, it indexed my page before I put my site there (I changed servers/hosts), see for yourself (search croatiankid).
    I don't really care though since I'm sure I get 0 traffic through searches, it's all from word-of-mouth, business cards, and signature link clicks.
