It does not say that educational institutions outside the U.S. are not eligible.

What is says is this which is in their FAQ's:

Are institutions of higher education located outside the United States eligible for names in the .edu domain?

Degree-granting institutions of higher education whose campuses are located outside the United States are eligible only if they have been accredited by one of the six U.S. regional accrediting agencies.
As long as your school is accredited by one of these 6 agencies then you can register for a .edu domain.

Unfortunately my colleague is off today as she deals with the edu domain and will be able to give more of an indication if there are other sites.

Can you let us know which institute it was you saw before, and see if they were US accredited?

Thank you very much for ur replies,

I saw the information regarding Accrediting Agencies. But it seems like they are meant only for institutions in USA. I would like to know whether there is any seperate accredting agency for Indian institutions. If not could you please tell me how to approach these agencies for the same. I am desperate to know the details. Google doesn't offer much help to me in this matter..... .If u want sample site for .edu domain name in india, please check this one. It's from my native place Kerala, widely known as "God's Own Country" worldwide.

By the way, I am really curious to know why my post is displayed with a cover with black dot on it.No other post seems to have the same icon. Does that mean I am in the black list....

    Sorry for the trouble,
    Haris.

    black dots and things

The black dot on a thread means that you are "subscribed" to it. Basically a thread that you started or have posted on.

If your school is not in this list:

    http://www.educause.edu/edudomain/international.asp

then it seems you are out of luck. It would then be up to your school to get accredited by one of those 6 accrediting agencies before your school would be eligible to have a .edu domain.

As for schools not on that list having .edu domains I would imagine it would be due to the fact that .edu domains were previously controlled by verisifgn whom may have not had such strict eligibility requirements so when this organziation took over those schools that already had a .edu domain and did not meet the new eligibility requirements were allowed to keep their .edu domain.

And yes that black dot means you are on our black list now. I'm keeping my eye on you so watch out.

No actually the black dot has a few different meanings. If signifies that you have replied to this thread.

    Thank u once again,
All the replies were really informative. Now i am going to forward these info to my institution. Let them try their best, though it seems like almost impossible. I hope u would provide me with more details if u happens to come across the same.
