    Abuse of end user

Want to guess why I don't have Flash installed? In my case though it was a web page where they had a noisy moving character that was wandering all around the web page I was trying to view. Flash allows intrusive advertising so I have disabled it by uninstalling it.

I would not call it abuse so much as use. The web is, generally speaking a big giant billboard. Without ads most websites would make little to no money. I don't mind a "nice" flash ad, if it is intrusive, no close button etc. that might be considered abuse. I especially don't mind if it is targeted advertisment, ie. To do with that which i am browsing. Do you consider commercials on TV abuse of technology? I might not like them, but again no commercials, no programming else you pay for your content.

You make me want to hurt myself.

Well, for the record, yes, I do, but that's an entirely personal opinion dealing with the particular quality of most commercials for one, but also having nothing to do with the fact that THE WHOLE PREMISE OF THIS THREAD WAS A BIT OF A JOKE TO BEGIN WITH.

    Yes, I know.

    You'll get over it...

Yes, I feel commercials are invasive. Just like the thirty minutes of commercials I have to now watch before I get to enjoy the movie I paid ten bucks a ticket for... wasn't there a time when TiVO was sued for being able to record your shows WITHOUT the commercials? There's a point where your marketing is too much marketing -- it's a free country, though, I'd never agree to make it a taxpayer's expended outlaw, but that sure as hell means they're not getting a new customer.

Don't get me wrong, hurt yourself if you like but I didn't say I liked the fact, nor that I add to it, but advertising does have it's place on the web and I don't particularly mind it if it's done with TACT. Plus what kind of discussion would it be if no-one took the opposite side.

Bass, most of my reaction was based in your implication that the Web is inherentlly nothing more than a "big billboard" and that generally a site's main reason for being is generating revenue. I don't much care about the principle of advertising in general. Of course it's not inherently wrong: we're all salespeople in some facility.

I didn't imply it, I did say it. "Generally" it is a big billboard and "Generally" most sites are there for the purpose of generating revenue. Most websites that a company would pay to have built (thearby giving people like ourselves some work) are in fact a big advertisement or a store to purchase goods from with the intent of increasing or generating revenue. There are sites like this one that are there for the good of man, but even here there are some ads that target a certain audience. The Ads hearin seem to be of things that the visitors might actually be intrested in. So it seems some thought was put into what is displayed and delivered to me with tact.

As far as the full video sound goes, that depends. I had a Dodge truck run past my screen on MSN, it was a really cool little piece and if I was in the market for a truck it would have caught my eye. I did not however, give MSN any inclination that I was looking for a truck, I was actually looking for a game. . .had a DOOM 3 monster come running accross my screen I'd a probably bitten.

    Dodge truck - No Tact

    Doom 3 monster - Tact

Sorry to take your joke thread and turn it serious but it seemed like an intresting topic.

At this point I think it would help to clarify whether or not you are simply observing what you perceive to be the fact of the Web being a "giant billboard" more or less, or whether you're basically saying that that's what the *idea* of the Web is, and that makes sense to you. 'Cause if it's the latter, that's why I think I'd like to bludgeon you with dead salmon. If not, then... all right.

I don't have a big problem with advertisements on the web, in general they're a good thing since they help pay for the web. In fact they're helping pay for this forum and that's fine with me.

What I dislike is advertisements that are obtrusive, just like it's annoying to have set a comfortable volume level on your television only to have some screaming idiot appear hawking cars requiring the quick use of the mute button to restore sanity it's annoying to visit a web site only to have some advertisement on the site launch into an audible advertisement. This is doubly a problem in a business environment where the only reason I have any sounds enabled at all is to let me know when there's a new email. My coworkers don't need to hear advertisements coming from my PC just because I'm visiting web pages and the advertiser who's supplying advertisements for the pages I'm visiting isn't smart enough to reject such ads.

It's what I percieve, I don't really think there is an idea of the web anymore, it is what it is. As the web tech gets better having a website will be like owning a tv station, streaming audio and video of your choice not just to your pc but to your mobile phone or pda's - in your above links I would agree they are outta hand, but I wouldn't call it misuse so much as just being dumb - don't watch that channel and \ or buy that product.

You don't need to explain the ultimate power of the binary choice to me.

The idea of the Web is dead to you, huh? Just another avenue for marketing, branding and capitalism, eh? Well, HOO-RAY, let me tell you hu-what. I'm so glad the future is here!
