    This forum needs to add a lounge area

    This forum needs to add a lounge area where we can just talk and get to know each other. My usual hangout is down so I thought I'd drop in and see how things were going here. I guess I'll see if I can learn something or help someone instead.

    ....What can I say? I'm a forum junkie!

    Been done and asked before. I doubt this place will ever have that side back, it was called 'the pit' back in the days

    Too much bandwidth consumption and server activity for rarely productive conversation.

    I take no responsibility for the above nonsense.

    You get a lot of dead-end posts too, which slowly turn into spam. Sort of drains away the focus from the rest of the forums in my opinion. Probably the fact that CodingForums has been without it will probably be the reason why it has been so popular for so long.

    A chat room or IRC wouldn't be a bad idea, though. I'd like to chat to my fellow CFers.

    I spend most of my time at a Forum about this same size and it is also web design based and we all know each other like real friends do. We share each others joys and triumphs as well as dissapointments and trials in life. We argue politics or whatever anyone wants to debate. We spend most of our time helping each other with coding and writing HTML or hardware/software problems but in between it's nice to get to know everyone.

    I'm pretty much a N00b but I'm getting there, thanks to all of my friends there. It really is a nice community. I would probably spend more time here if I had some friends here. I only know one person over here and he is also a member there.

    As far as time zones go, better than half of our community is in Europe. We even have a few Aussies. However, we aren't chatting per se, we are on the regular forum boards with our chatter.

    I guess I understand the reasoning of too much bandwidth but they seem to get along fine over there.

    Oh well, I hope I've not offended anyone by my suggestion and I guess I'll see ya on the boards.

    Suggestions are always welcomed, don't feel bad about it. It is the only way to move forward. Chin up, and strut.

    Naaah, I don't feel bad about it. I just wanted everyone to know that my intentions were not meant to offend.

    well I am with DannyB on this & have brought this up myself before , I am an ex `pitter` and would love to see its return.

    I don't think bandwidth is such an issue these days and hey hits are hits ~

    The moderation of the pit was the real issue as I recall and its something that needs to be done carefully , I think CF & javascript kit could only benefit from a reintroduction of `the pit` (by any name) as so many others have.

    In fact I recall the old WebsiteAbstraction forums being rather trend-setting in having such an area in an otherwise technical forum , so whilst its perhaps better to set fashion rather than follow it I don't think thats an issue here

    The chat rooms as mentioned never really got going, but ...
    PHP Code:
    <?php
    while( !$implemented ){
        echo
    "bring back the pit<br />\n";
    }
    ?>
    don't run that at home boys and girls ok
    resistance is...

    MVC is the current buzz in web application architectures. It comes from event-driven desktop application design and doesn't fit into web application design very well. But luckily nobody really knows what MVC means, so we can call our presentation layer separation mechanism MVC and move on. (Rasmus Lerdorf)

    LOL- Now that was funny, Firepages, and just when I thought this issue was dead, too. I usually hang out at a similar forum. I look for questions that I'm qualified to answer in HTML page layout or something about CSS maybe and if there's nothing going on, yet, then I hang out in the lounge for awhile.

    I think you'll relate when I say that If that happens here then there's no place to go but to log off and check back later.

    You know, it's like inertia. Things in motion....

    Well the problem is on the negative side. when everything is still it tends to stay still untill someone asks a question. At htmlforums we are all there talking and scanning constantly for new posts and the questions all get answered immediately and effeciently as a side effect.

    Moderation can be tricky. If you have good moderators who don't play favorites and you have a good group then there's usually no trouble. If a thread gets over charged with emotion or too far off topic then a moderator, who by the way is one of us, either posts a warning or locks the thread down. It's kinda hard to argue in a locked thread.

    We as a group don't allow any foolishness. We tend to be on the side of the moderator and we work together to keep the forum clean and fun. There's no flaming, vulgarity, racism or other slanderous behavior. We just have fun.

    Why would that be so difficult here?

    Ya know without a pit, there doesn't seem to be much to moderate. The questions get answered (eventually, and usually the next day) and that's it unless someone has given incomplete or poor advice. That usually is taken care of by a member unless the two members disagree on the solution. Other than that it is without incident.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but what I see is a handfull of core people that stop in and answer questions regularly. The rest of the members have been here once or twice to get advice and never come back.

    The same is true of any forum but if there were a coversation pit here then the core group could grow.

    Proof positve: take a look at htmlforums dot com and look at the lounge area. The first thing will notice is that it's more like a family than it is a message forum.

    Once you've done that, get yourself back here and help me convince these guys to follow suit. (LOL)

    Moderation in a general forum can be sticky when moderators have a certain moral standpoint and can not stay focused/distanced , so its hard , and to make it worse often everybody is right !

    Why would that be so difficult here?
    I dont think it would/should be , in saying that the old webmasters pit did have its problems from time to time , enough in fact to warrant its closure , but with efficient and unbiased/unaffected (perhaps anonymous) moderation I would love to see it given a try again.

    At the end of the day I suspect George (WA) will be more interested in the short term in other possible changes/additions to the forums , and unless I can come up with something to bribe him (e.g. DNA proof positive that George really is BG) with we shall have to wait and see.
