New usergroup added for just registered members

    Hi:
A heads up that "just registered members" will now be placed in a usergroup of its own temporarily. While in this usergroup, the following restrictions apply:

    • User cannot have a sig
    • User cannot post polls

As a new user you exist this usergroup once you have reached the following:

    • Made 5 posts or more, AND
    • Have been registered for 7 days or longer

This change is done to help fight spammers. Any suggestions/ feedback welcome.

I recommend public floggings for all who don't read the rules and posting guidelines before posting.

    this user, from today:

    http://www.codingforums.com/member.php?u=62845

spam from at least a month using different usernames. usualy it post up to 10-11 posts, today was 30.

I think that a dedicated button "report user for spam" who notify somebody who can block and later remove the user could work along with increasing the number of posts before adding a sig, 5 is to easy.

    regards

Well, the idea of the new usergroup is mainly to enable mods and I to better identify newly registered spammers. With sigs initially disabled for them, they are forced to spam within the post itself, versus putting up a seemingly legit post but spam through their sig. This makes it easier for us to identify a spammer. I'm not sure increasing the jail break threshold will do any more good than the current set up (5+ posts AND 7+ days registration), versus inconveniencing legit new members.

Is there anything we can do to give a temporary boost to the welcoming factor for legit users? Such as if they seem normal, perhaps something similar to the Thanks button idea but a Welcome button. Ok thats not a great idea, but hopefully you get what I mean. Something that any regular member will be able to do quickly to let the new user know they are welcomed.

Banned! Nothing replaces human spam fighting most of the time unfortunately.

the only inconvenience for spammer is the 7 days period.
with a delay of 15 seconds, 5 posts means 60 seconds and in a forum like web project with 8 subforums and only 2 moderators is hard to beleave that is easy to be identified.
for short that means that with 7 days exception nothing has change for him.
what about increasing to at least 25 posts or 50 posts or more.
if the spamer must spend more time and work to have links in the signature it lose the interest for the forum because after all this work it could be discovered in few posts.
On the other hand I don't think that a new user is affected by this, probably other opinion could make this more clear.

what about the "report user" button?

    regards

As WA mentioned, the only way to fight a determined spammer is human spam fighting. I once visited a forum where every single post and thread from a new user was reviewed be a moderator. That put off most of the spammers, but a few will get around even that. IMO, it is best to keep this system and continue with the banning of spammers, it seems to be the most labour-effective.

I do know forums that generally don’t allow links in signatures or have disabled seeing links in signatures if you’re not logged in. While I’m not promoting that idea I think it doesn’t necessarily repel new people from coming here and/or feeling welcome. After all, why should it be so important (for a new person) to have a link in the signature that not having a link there makes them decide to go away?

In a nutshell: I agree with oesxyl.

w;o;w Gold, w#O;wg;Old, or how this new regular user:

    http://www.codingforums.com/member.php?u=62398

can say: 哇金 - this is google translation,

now promote this w0w g0ld but over few weeks it start with other words and can't stay busy and update regex/code whatever you use each time it change something.

the sad thing is that I didn't plan to find this way to avoid baning just start writing and I consider that I don't have a lot of imagination like others.
