    IRC channel?

I recognize that this forum is already a sufficient medium for asking questions and sharing information, but I couldn't help but wonder whether or not there was also an IRC channel that existed for the site. I spend a great deal of time (probably more than is good for me) on IRC and use it as a programming resource quite often.

I think it'd be good for anyone who needs a quick question answered. And anyone who has been helped one-on-one over chat knows how helpful it can be. Best of all, there's no waiting around for replies. Or it could even be a place for CF members to just hang out and socialize.

Like I said: I don't know if there's already a channel or if this has been suggested and shot down in the past. I just think it'd be a great compliment to the site - another place to get answers and help others. A chat applet could even be added to the site to help direct people there.

    What do you think?

I did do a search, actually. I think don't the search function is working. I searched for "irc" and got 0 results...

Either way, I think it could be managed fairly well with a good set of channel rules. You wouldn't even have to host it on this server - you could use freenode or slashnet (slashdot's server).

I just recently joined CF and found it rather odd that there was no general discussion forum. It's hard to get a real sense of community without one - or at least, it's a very different sense of community. Personally, I think it would be for the best to have either a general discussion forum (or The Pit - as I've heard rumored) or an IRC channel. It helps people get to know each other better. And it's sometimes just nice to shoot the sh** with some quality geeks

The vB search won't index the acronym "IRC" sometimes because it's so short. If you used the Google "quick search" you would get several matches.

There is a "General Discussion" type of forum, but you have to be an active member for a little while to see it. There's also a forum for geek news and discussion that you should be able to see already(IIRC).

I had to search for 'irc*' since you can't search for 3 character or less terms.

There is the 'Active Members Lounge' which you'll see if you have more than 50 posts and have been around for more than 3 months. That is where general discussion happens.

To be honest I've never really tried IRC (or chatrooms in general), so I never looked at the possibility of adding such functionality to CF. Like the others have said though, there is a general discussions area on CF, just that it's limited to regular members with x number of posts and seniority since registration time. There's a reason why the "Webmaster Pit" was removed a while ago, and IRC seems like it could very well become "Webmaster Pit" part 2. That, plus I'm afraid Spookster may use it to plan some sort of coup against me.

As if him doing it on a CF provided IRC or doing it elsewhere would matter... The revolution is certain to come in any case!

Who wants live chatting? I wouldn't ever use it because it would be flooded with people I would have to talk to all day, and couldn't actually get any work done.

Boards are much better when you want to minimize lost time, IMO. As well your question is more likely to get a better answer if its out there for anyone to see.
