    IP addresses???? What?

    Okay so we all know what an IP is, and that essentially it can't be traced to you or anyone specifically unless the authorities are involved and the internet provider is contacted to give the name/ address of the IP number, but how does law enforcement get the IP in the first place? From what I understand, the only way you can find out someone's IP is if you get them to click on a link, run it through a tracker, and then you'll have it. So is law enforcement able to skip that step and look straight at your IP?

    And then if the person catches wind of the investigation, they can delete the sight and just change their IP by spoofing the MAC?

    I'm trying to catch an offensive poster on my own without having to involve law enforcement, but he's deleted the site and I'm certain has changed his IP

    If he accessed your website and your web server is configured to log there you have the IP.

    Even if he changes the IP ISPs keep a log (I don't know for how long) of who was using the IP X at the time Y.

    Authorities ask the ISP to hand over the information backed by a court order.

    I keep this script handy to find my IP address, saved as ~/bin/myip:
    Code:
    #!/bin/sh
    echo "$(wget -o/dev/null -O- http://queryip.net/ip/)"
    queryip.net/ip/ doesn't give any extraneous html or ads--just the text of your IP.

    I also run a cron job that tests my current IP address and, if it's changed, uploads it in a small text file so I can always remotely find my home IP address without publishing it in DNS.

    Hoops, there are many more ways to get his IP.
    For instance if he has skype you can use a skype resolver. If you do a bit of searching around on google for his name you may find it. This doesn't have to be his name, but the one he used on your forum or website because usually people use the same name.
    You can use a service such as this: http://www.ip2location.com/free/email-tracer
    If you have an email from him.

    Those are all I can think of for now.
