    XP install problem

Before anyone says anything.. (dont take this the wrong way) .. i am not new to installing xp or any other OS, i have done it many times before...

Anyway.. i slip the xp disk in and it lets me "press any key to boot from cd", so.. i do that and it goes to "setup is checking your system config".
    Then the screen goes blank??

I have tried it with a few xp CDs; my own, a friends, and one i "found" floating around the inet

The laptop used to run xp fine.. it even lets me install vista so its not that my specs are rubbish, unless somethings broke hardware wise.

    Thanx in advance..

It would be good to know why you are installing Windows in the frst place. Is it becuase the computer crashed, or did you just decide to format the whole thing to start all over again?

When you say blank screen, do you get a white, blue, or black screen?
My first guess would be a bad hard drive, but hard to tell without details.

Just had enough with windows vista, i only installed it to see what it was like

black.. the screens still on though, something else you might like to know is that once the screen goes like this the fan usually seems to sound like it speeds up.

Could be a number of things to be honest. Have you tried it with a different hard disk installed in the system? Something in Vista might be disallowing the reformatting of the disk or whatever, although I don't see how or why. I've seen bad graphics cards prevent the installation of XP Pro before now but if it was working then I don't see why it'd suddenly die if it was a good piece of hardware before. It's almost definately a hardware issue..a bad optical drive for instance.
A bad hard disk is something to look into as well.

Fan seems to speed up? Hmm, I don't know what'd cause this - it may be coincidence but maybe the failed install has something to do with the BIOS.

    Indeed, that doesn't sound good.
Try booting from the Windows Vista CD, see if you get the same problem. If you don't get the same problem, try formatting the hard drive using the vista CD. Once it's formatted, I assume it will reboot, so at that point replace the Vista CD with the XP one. It's been so long since I formatted a computer, so I don't know if what I'm saying makes sence...

i'll give it a try tomorow and get back with results!

The only thing that puts me off it being a hardware problem is that it can still run smoothly, its just this reinstall of xp.

Can you view the contents of the xp disk using vista? If your computer can boot from a usb storage device and you have a 700mb-1gb one laying around I guess you could boot from usb and reformat using the files on the flash drive. Have you tried other CDs in your drive while using vista?

when i'm using vista everything works, i can do whatever with the hard disk

i tried booting with a live CD linux this morning, i usually use slax but i couldnt find the CD so i burned a new one called "Ubuntu"

computer loads fine but i cant access the hard disk, this is probably because of its file system though

I say find a disc that simply does formatting. Then format the system and try installing xp. I think some how Vista is not letting you install xp. If you have time and want to securly format your system then I recommend Darik's boot nuke but if you want something that will just format it then check out the Ultimate Boot CD. It has many useful tools on it for formatting and data recovery. Its one of my favorite discs.
