    Best bulletin board software

    Hi All,

I'm trying to select a bulletin board software for a client. I've not really set up a forum before so I'm kind of confused. I also notice there are lots of choices in the market both free and not free. Seems like the most popular are Vbulettin, PHPBB, Invision Power board, SMF. Please could someone give me some hints on this? If you could tell me some pros and cons, and i'm also particular about security. I've heard about vulnerabilities with PHPBB (defacing and other stuff).
    Thanks a lot

From what I've seen and heard, you pay for quality - vBulletin is regarded as one of the "best" around in terms of features, security and stability etc...
And yeah, there are a lot of flaws in phpBB.

Thanks a lot for the replies. If I get you right, Vbulletin is the best commercial BB while phpbb is the best free BB. Do you have anything to say about the other ones?

As far as I know, phpBB is very secure as long as you keep up with the updates. Which have slowly been getting further and further apart which shows that the number of flaws in it are obviously decreasing.

You have to pay for vBulletin and unless your site is popular and you can generate enough revenue to pay for it.

SO depending on what your website is about and how popular it is would determine whether you go for a free (phpBB, SMF) forum or pay (vB, Invision) forum software.

If you got the money, pay for vBulletin, a mate of mine on here told me to use vB, and it's fantastic. If your on a low budget, try PunBB out. It's pretty cool for a small peice of forum software
