What it takes a long time to reach the desktop? How much stuff do you have running on startup? Could you run hijackthis and post the log here? Have you fully defragged your disk(s)?

    download it from here:
    http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Then run it. click on "Do a system scan and save a log file".
Copy what the log file contains and then post it here.

Do you have a Gateway computer? The ShowWnd.exe process shows up all over the place as backdoor Trojan but it can also be a legitimate process for keyboard software that comes with Gateway computers. Other than that had you installed any software recently prior to the slowing down of your computer? I notice you have ColdFusionMX installed. It has many processes running in the background. Did you install that recently?

You should be okay then with that process. Gateway owns eMachines. Here is more info on that from Gateway support:
    http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/2-1945178247.shtml

You may want to install and run Ad Aware and SpyBot which are both good spyware detection and removal programs. That will help keep spyware off your computer. As for what's slowing things down I would look through your list of running processes and see if one of those is bogging things down.

I know it sounds a bit drastic, but have you thought about backing up all the stuff you wanna keep and just reformatting your hard disk and reinstalling Windows XP? It sounds like you're having a lot of problems with your installation and you *could* benefit from reinstalling your OS.

He's right... Thats what i did. I had an older pc that was getting really slow and finally for some reason the gfx was knocked down to sixteen colors because of to much stuff running. I wend and copied all the stuff i wanted to keep to my webserver and then totally formated then got the OS back and then copied back all the files i wanted and it ran alot better.
It does sound drastic but its not really that bad
    Why not thank me?

If the computer is extremely slow, and if you perhaps notice the hard drive making funny noises its possible the hard drive could be failing. Ive seen a few hard drives start failing and it looks as if the hard drive takes multiple tries to recall or store a certain block of data, corruption of certain information randomly sometimes can occur. Windows will take much longer then normal to start or be variable in start time without any apparant reason. Running a scan disk / chkdsk can sometimes point out errors like this. I notice that reformatting of a drive like this will offten take rediculous amounts of time or will get stuck at a certain sector.

My Windows XP Pro suddendly started to take about 4 minutes to boot up... it was after I installed my Canon scanner... if I leave it plugged in to the USB port - it takes aaaages to boot the PC up - when I remove it - the boot up process is much quicker. My advice would be to try something like this - unplug all your USB devices and try booting up that way...
